Description

This Short Bee Mix is a varied assortment of low-growing perennial and annual plants, selected for their ability to attract and feed bees. Easy to grow in ordinary soil and requiring very little maintenance, they can be sown directly in place in spring or autumn in mild climates, in a sunny spot, in well-prepared and loosened soil. Their flowering period extends from spring to the end of summer, providing an abundant source of food for pollinators. The flower bed will bloom for several years and also provide a refuge for biodiversity. Some plants will self-seed wherever they please.

This selection consists of 23 varieties, including kidney vetch (Anthyllis vulneraria), cornflower (Centaurea cyanus), dwarf cosmos, purple viper's bugloss (Echium plantagineum), Gilia leptantha, tidy tips (Layia platyglossa), poached egg plant (Limnanthes douglasii), pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium*), catnip (Nepeta cataria), sweet mignonette (Reseda odorata), and Persian clover (Trifolium resupinatum). All these plants show rather rapid growth and easily naturalise in the garden, in ordinary and well-draining soil. A packet of seeds covers approximately 3 square metres (32 square feet). The plants do not exceed 45 cm (17.7 in) in height.

Meadows are very in vogue, and this beautiful alternative to a lawn combines practicality with pleasure, flowering throughout the summer season while requiring very little maintenance. Watering if the weather is very dry and trimming to 10 cm (3.9 in) above the ground in autumn will be more than enough. Ideal for adding colour and life to a slightly wild and sunny area of the garden, in a flower bed or meadow, this mix also helps to attract bees to fruit trees, promoting pollination and fruit production. Invite nature into your garden: sow our flower mixes along a path, or on the slope bordering a sunken path, or at the back of the garden on the border with the countryside.

Planting and care

Sowing:

Sow directly in place, from March to early June, once the soil has warmed up, in well-prepared soil that has been cleared of weeds and raked. Sow thinly on the surface of the soil and lightly rake to cover the seeds. Alternatively, sow at a depth of 1.5 mm (0.1 in) in furrows spaced 30 cm (11.8 in) apart. Germination usually takes 14 to 30 days. In mild climates, it is possible to sow in autumn.

Cultivation:

When the young plants appear, water well and remove weeds. In autumn, at the end of flowering, seeds can be collected and sown elsewhere. Water well to make the seeds adhere to the soil. Prune or mow to 10 cm (3.9 in) at the end of flowering.
