I have already sown this variety and the germination rate is rather good. The young plants have developed well and have been quite well supplied with flowers. However, the yellow-orange colour was dominant to the detriment of the white variety shown in the photo. But in the end, the effect was still successful!

Description

Thunbergia alata is an invasive perennial in its country of origin, but an adorable annual climbing plant in temperate climates. It displays flowers from June to October in different colours: warm orange, red, light orange, reddish-orange, white or bright yellow, with or without a small centre of characteristic purple, almost black, which earned it its pretty name of Black-eyed Susan. Its stems, covered with lush foliage, cling to trellises on their own and allow for the quick creation of large and decorative pots that can be kept in the conservatory. It appreciates warmth and sunlight as well as fertile, cool and well-drained soil.

Thunbergia alata is a fast-growing, perennial and voluble climbing plant native to tropical regions of East Africa, which only tolerates very light frosts. It is for these reasons that it is grown as an annual in temperate climates. It reaches a height of 2 m (6 ft 7 in) in a few months. Its stems wrap around their support. They are covered with lush, dark green foliage, composed of evergreen (frost-proof), villous, dentate leaves, shaped like a heart or an arrow. Flowering occurs from June to October, depending on the sowing date. The flowers are borne on a peduncle, in the axil of the leaves, and come in different shades of orange, yellow, red or white. The corolla is tubular at the base and extends into five spreading lobes. At the centre of this flower shines an eye, which is not always black, whose role is to attract pollinating insects.

Black-eyed Susan is suitable for cultivation in both pots and open ground, in sunny locations. A voluble but light climber, it pairs well with a perennial climber, such as a clematis, and can also be used as ground cover. You can combine it with summer-flowering bulbs such as gladioli: it will twist around the leaves and bloom in the most unlikely places, adding whimsy to somewhat rigid flower beds.

Planting and care

Sow the seeds of Thunbergia alata from February to April in pots or containers filled with moist compost and cover with a layer of 6 mm (0.2 in) of compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator or a warm location and keep at a constant temperature between 20 and 25 °C (68 and 77 °F). Keep the seedlings in a bright location, as light promotes germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged. Germination takes place within 14 to 21 days. A mid-summer sowing will produce plants capable of flowering in winter and spring in a cold greenhouse. Transplant the young plants into 7.5 cm (3 in) diameter pots or containers. Gradually acclimatise them to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting them outside, once there is no more risk of frost. You can plant your Thunbergia alata in the ground or in a pot. If planting in the ground, wait until the last frost has passed. (Black-eyed Susans do not tolerate frost and do not handle temperatures below 8 °C (46.4 °F) well.) In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a warm and bright location in pots to speed up their growth. Plant your Black-eyed Susans in a sunny or partially shaded position. They require a light and humus-bearing soil. They tolerate short periods of drought quite well, but will need regular watering during hot summer weather to flower well. In pots, they should be watered very regularly. Very floriferous and fast-growing, they can reach 2 m (6 ft 7 in) in height over the course of a summer. If used as climbing plants, remember to provide support. Usually grown as annuals, they are actually very delicate perennials: by bringing them indoors in September, you can extend their flowering into autumn and winter.
