Description
Begonia Copacabana F1 White is a trailing hybrid begonia, derived from the botanical species Begonia boliviensis. Coated seeds make sowing easier for a plant that can be tricky to reproduce, given how fine its seeds are. This cultivar forms beautiful trailing clumps covered in large, white, elongated flowers which brighten window boxes, balcony planters and hanging baskets from June until the first frosts. Vigorous, highly floriferous, tolerant of both morning sun and partial shade, it creates a lush atmosphere on a balcony, terrace or near the house.
A tuberous species of the Begoniaceae family, Begonia boliviensis, or the Bolivian begonia, is native to the cloud forests of the Andes mountain range, particularly the eastern slopes of Bolivia and Argentina, where it grows in crevices of damp rocks and on cool slopes near streams.
The Copacabana F1 series was developed by the Czech seed house Cerny Seed, renowned for its seed-raised begonias. The aim was to obtain plants that are compact in cultivation, highly branched, forming a large tuber, and capable of flowering early and for a long time from seed. The Copacabana F1 White type differs from the botanical species in its more regular habit, its lower stature (around 35cm instead of 60cm) and above all in its large pure white flowers, rarely seen on the rather orange wild forms.
From a tuber, the plant produces several fleshy stems, first upright, then arching and trailing, which form a dense clump. Growth is rapid, allowing a good size to be achieved in a single season. Begonia Copacabana F1 White reaches around 30 to 35cm in height and 35 to 40cm in width, with the stems able to spill well beyond the container. The foliage is typical of Bolivian begonias: elongated, asymmetrical, lanceolate leaves with toothed edges, in a bright green, sometimes slightly bluish. The single, tubular flowers measure 6 to 7cm long; they are borne in small groups along the stems and sway at the slightest breeze. The narrow and pointed tepals open into elongated bells of pure white, lit by a cluster of bright yellow stamens at the heart. Flowering begins in early summer, 14 to 16 weeks after sowing, and continues until the first frosts.
At the end of the season, the stems and leaves dry out. Its large tuber can be stored in a dry, airy, frost-free place to be replanted the following spring.
The Bolivian Begonia Copacabana F1 White creates lush hanging baskets, window boxes or pots that are both bright and light. Its white flowers pair well with the warm tones of trailing begonias such as ‘Santa Cruz Orange’ or Summerwings Dark Elegance with purple foliage. You can also pair it with the bush Fuchsia 'Gartenmeister Bonstedt', with bronze-purple green foliage and coral flowers.

Planting and care
Sow Bolivian begonia Copacabana F1 White from January to March in a seed tray.
Use a good-quality potting compost, sieved over the surface to ensure good contact between the seed and its substrate. Before sowing, firm the compost lightly with a presser board and moisten it slightly. Sow your seeds carefully. Do not cover the seeds. Water with a very fine spray or a small hand mister. Place your seed tray in the light, away from direct sunlight, at a temperature of 24°C to 27°C.
Germination will take 15 to 30 days. As soon as the young plants can be handled, transplant them into 7cm pots. Keep the compost moist but not waterlogged. Then, 15 days before planting out in their final position, begin to acclimatise them gradually until they reach a temperature of 15°C.
At the end of May or beginning of June, the temperature in the garden will be warm enough for your young plants. Choose a slightly shaded spot. Add a good trowel-full of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 40cm apart.
Regularly remove faded flowers to maintain their beauty and encourage new blooms.
In autumn, bring the pots indoors and allow the foliage to dry out before lifting the tubers from the soil, brushing them clean and storing them in a dry place until the following spring, when they can be replanted in pots.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
