Description

This Begonia 'Santa Cruz Orange' is a vigorous hybrid of Begonia boliviensis that combines vigour, floribundance, and ease of cultivation. It is a beautiful plant, initially upright and then trailing, with vegetation that quickly forms a cascade adorned with beautiful dark green leaves and bright orange flowers shaped like elongated bells reminiscent of fuchsias. Low-maintenance and undemanding, it blooms for a very long period in both sun and shade. These qualities make this new trailing begonia a magnificent plant for containers and hanging baskets. Its combination with burgundy or purple blooms is fantastic.

The Begonia 'Santa Cruz Orange' is an herbaceous annual plant belonging to the Begoniaceae family. This variety is part of a series of hybrids selected for their rapid growth, floribundance, branching and trailing habit, as well as their great resistance and ease of cultivation. 'Santa Cruz Orange' will quickly reach a height of 40 cm (15.7 in) with a diameter of 50 cm (19.7 in) and can cascade up to 60-70 cm. Appearing in June and persisting until the first frost, its flowers are single, elongated, composed of wing-shaped petals, and have a bright and shiny orange colour. They are clustered and bloom among elegant elongated leaves with toothed edges, displaying a beautiful dark green colour. The plant tolerates partial shade and full sun, as well as rainy and cool summers as well as heatwaves, which do not prevent it from flowering. Its water requirements are modest.

Begonia Santa Cruz is ideal for full sun, but can also be placed in partial shade. It can be used in pots, balconies, or hanging baskets. It pairs well with Impatiens and blue lobelias and works wonders with petunias or surfinias in shades of purple, plum, or even black. Begonias also thrive in well-tended flower beds, alongside lighter flowers, as well as in pots on the terrace. Finally, it is good to know that there are hardy begonias, such as Begonia grandis.

Note: Please be aware that our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered place (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

The Santa Cruz Orange Begonia blooms from June until the first frost. It is placed in well-drained, fertile, moist soil, in full sun or partial shade. Moderate watering is required (it does not tolerate excessive water!) and frequent fertilisation for intense flowering. It may be susceptible to powdery mildew. The Begonia is a frost-sensitive plant, therefore it does not tolerate negative temperatures. For this reason, it is often cultivated in containers that can be easily brought indoors in heated greenhouses or under a heated veranda at the first sign of frost. If they are planted in the ground, lift and store them in a sheltered place until the following spring.
