Even in a 10 cm pot, they are ridiculously small (2 leaves!) with no shoots after 3 weeks... perhaps they will flower in October!

Description

The Begonia Summerwings Dark Elegance, dark and magnificent, unfurls cascades of vermilion red flowers, formed in single and elongated corollas, a colour enhanced by the dark green-purplish hue of its foliage, which appears black and glossy when backlit. This vigorous and highly floriferous variety has a semi-trailing habit, ideal for hanging baskets and containers. It is undemanding, braving the wind and cool climates, blooming relentlessly from summer to autumn, with almost no maintenance required.

The Begonia 'Summerwings Dark Elegance' is an herbaceous annual plant belonging to the Begoniaceae family. This variety is part of a series of recent hybrids selected for their fast growth, floriferousness, compact and trailing habit, as well as their very pure colours. 'Dark Elegance' will quickly reach a height of 30 cm (11.8 in) and a diameter of 40 cm (15.7 in). Appearing in June and lasting until the first frost, its flowers are single and elongated, composed of wing-shaped petals, in a light and shiny red. They are clustered together and bloom among elegant, well-formed, oblong and pointed leaves, of a wonderful dark green-purplish colour that beautifully enhances the flowering. The plant tolerates partial shade and full sun, as well as rainy and cool summers, and even heatwaves, without hindering its flowering.

The Begonia is ideal for full sun, but can also be placed in partial shade. It can be used in containers, hanging baskets, or as a trailing plant. The Summerwings Begonias pair well with Impatiens and lobelias. Begonias are also at ease in well-groomed flowerbeds, alongside lighter flowers, or grown in pots on the terrace. Finally, it is good to know that there are hardy begonias, such as Begonia grandis.

Note: Please be aware that our young plants in plug trays are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

The Begonia Summerwings Dark Elegance flowers from June until the first frost. It is placed in a well-drained, fertile, moist soil, in full sun or partial shade. Water moderately (it does not tolerate excess water!) and provide frequent fertilisation for intense flowering. The Begonia Summerwings can be susceptible to powdery mildew. The Begonia is a frost-sensitive plant, so it does not tolerate negative temperatures. For this reason, it is often cultivated in containers that can be easily brought indoors into heated greenhouses or conservatories at the first signs of frost. If it is planted in the ground, it is time to remove them and store them in a sheltered place until the following spring.
