Description
The Coleus Colocha Mix is a seed assortment of coleus that allows you to grow a palette of original, frilled foliage from a single packet. From the Colocha series, this mix notably combines the Rose and Scarlet varieties, with finely cut, crinkled leaves edged with light green, in intense shades of pink, red and purple. They form attractive clumps in pots, planters and part-shade borders. This frost-tender coleus can be grown as an annual in the garden, or as a houseplant.
'Colocha Mix' belongs to the species Coleus scutellarioides, of the Lamiaceae family. This species was known for a long time as Plectranthus scutellarioides or Solenostemon scutellarioides. It is a perennial often grown as an annual in temperate climates. It is native to the humid forests of South-East Asia, particularly Java, and grows spontaneously from India and Indochina to Papua New Guinea and northern Australia, in open, warm, very humid woodland.
'Colocha' is a series of cultivars developed by the Czech breeder Černý Seed. The plants are well branched, reaching 45 to 50cm in height and about 35cm in width. The 'Colocha Mix' blend includes the varieties 'Colocha Rose' and 'Colocha Scarlet'. Compared with classic forms of coleus, the 'Colocha' varieties stand out for their smaller, deeply cut leaves with crinkled, "frilly" edges, very soft to the touch, as well as for their late flowering. Their leaves resemble small oak leaves, with a finely fringed margin. They come in shades of red, raspberry pink or intense purple, darker in the centre, edged with lemon green or bright green. This pigmentation remains very vivid in part shade, but may fade in full sun. The nectar-rich flowers are of particular interest to pollinating insects, but it is advisable to remove them to concentrate the plant's energy on the foliage.
Coleus 'Colocha Mix' adds texture and colour to shade or part-shade settings. Plant it along path edges, in colourful patches at the base of shrubs, or in large pots on a terrace sheltered from the wind. This mix pairs well with Heuchera 'Midnight Rose', with its large, dark purple leaves speckled with pink, and Begonia 'Dragon Wing Red', which bears clusters of bright red flowers above the frilled foliage. A blue hosta, 'Halcyon', will create a beautiful contrast in texture and colour. On a shaded balcony, you can pair Coleus 'Colocha Mix' with a few pale-flowered Impatiens (Impatiens walleriana double salmon, Impatiens SunPatiens Vigorous White Variegated), to brighten this spectacular foliage even further.

Planting and care
Sow Coleus Colocha Mix seeds from February to April, in warmth, in a seed tray or pots filled with a fine, moistened seed compost. Place the very fine seeds on the surface without covering: simply press them lightly onto the substrate, then cover with a transparent lid or film to retain heat and moisture. Place at 20–24 °C, in full light but out of direct sunlight. Germination typically takes 10 to 20 days.
As soon as the seedlings have 2 to 3 true leaves, carefully transplant them into individual pots, in a more nutritious compost, burying the stem slightly to encourage good rooting. Pinch out the tips if desired to promote branching.
Gradually acclimatise them to cooler temperatures by ventilating, then move them outdoors in May, after the frosts.
Plant them in open ground or in pots in a light, humus-bearing, moist soil, in partial shade or dappled shade, watering regularly but not excessively. Throughout the season, water consistently, and apply a little liquid fertiliser for flowering plants every 15 days if growing them in pots.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
