Description

Gazania rigens Zany F1 Mixture is a hybrid variety with a mixture of single-coloured and bi-coloured flowers in various shades. It includes flowers in yellow, white, purple-pink, orange, and bi-coloured combinations of these tones. The heart of the inflorescence is yellow, sometimes rimmed with brown. This high-performance mixture has uniform growth and produces an abundance of large flowers with stable colours throughout the flowering period. Its flowers are early and long-lasting, even in cool or cloudy climates. Easy to grow and undemanding, it is equally attractive in a pot or container on a terrace or balcony as it is in a low border, rockery, or in landscaping compositions. Exceptionally heat-resistant, it thrives particularly well in full sun.

Gazania rigens has botanical synonyms including Gazania splendens, Gorteria rigens, Othonna rigens. It belongs to the extensive family of Asteraceae. Native to South Africa and Mozambique, it stands out with its flowers arranged in heads, in a bright yellow with an orange heart sprinkled with touches of black and brown. Although it is a herbaceous perennial plant, Gazania is often grown as an annual in cool and humid climates. In the south, it can sometimes survive as a perennial where there are relatively mild winters and a dry environment, particularly in summer and to a lesser extent in winter.

Gazania Zany F1 Mixture is a more compact selection, measuring 20 cm in height and spread. This plant forms a small clump of basal leaves that give rise to numerous stems bearing a single head. These leaves are tough and have a medium green hue on their upper side, while their underside sports a silvery hue. It offers an early and prolonged flowering that renews from May to October, provided that faded flowers are regularly removed. The solitary flowers appear at the end of the stems and resemble large daisies. They measure on average 6 to 7 cm in diameter. The petals, called ligules in Asteraceae, are arranged in a staggered pattern around the heart. At the centre of the flower are tubular central florets, giving the flower a velvety texture, in a yellow colour rimmed with brown. It is important to note that the flowers tend to close in the absence of sun.

Gazania rigens Zany F1 Mixture is highly prized for its abundant and regular flowering from spring to autumn, as well as its ability to withstand dry conditions in sunny areas. With its compact habit and dense foliage, it exudes an elegance and lightness that harmonises well with other surrounding plants. It adds a dramatic touch to all container arrangements or garden settings. Pair it with annual Verbenas, Gauras and small grasses like Stipa, or Achilleas. This Gazania adapts well to coastal gardens, where it can thrive in sandy, light, poor soils, enduring drought, full sun, wind, and sea spray.

Planting and care

Sow the seeds of Gazania Zany F1 Mixture, which you have previously soaked for a few hours, under glass, from February to April. Bury them under 3 mm of a mixture of soil and sand. Keep them in a warm place, ideally with a temperature ranging between 18 and 25°C. Keep the soil slightly moist without excess. You will need to wait 14 to 30 days to see the seedlings appear. When they are large enough to handle, transplant them into pots and acclimatise for about ten days. After that, plant them in the ground when frosts are no longer a concern. Make sure to space each young plant 20 to 30 cm apart.

Cultivation: in full sun, in ordinary soil, but well-drained, possibly lightened with gravel, sand, and soil. Gazanias dislike stagnant moisture, so avoid leaving water-filled saucers under the pots. A special flowering plant fertiliser will be appreciated.
