Description

Lisianthus or Eustoma russellianum F1 ‘Cessna Green III’ has charming, double corollas delicately tinted green, highly sought after in floral art. This F1 variety is intended for decorating summer borders and pots, and especially for cut flowers. Its straight, sturdy stems last a long time in a vase. Choose it to add freshness to summer scenes and create refined cut flower arrangements.

Pelleted seeds are very fine seeds surrounded by a neutral coating (clay, nutrients) that makes them larger and more uniform. They allow for more precise sowing, easier handling, reduce losses, and promote more uniform germination.

A member of the Gentianaceae family, Eustoma russellianum (syn. Eustoma grandiflorum, ex-Lisianthus russellianus) is native to the prairies and sandy, damp plains from the southern United States to northern Mexico.
‘Cessna Green III’ is an F1 hybrid from the Cessna series, selected for its straight stems and its regular, prolonged summer flowering. It is a herbaceous perennial plant grown as an annual or biennial. Its habit is upright and branching, its foliage is grey-blue-green and chalky. Its roots are sensitive to excess water and late transplanting. Each plant will reach 60 to 80 cm tall and 25–35 cm wide in the ground; 30 to 45 cm in a pot. The summer flowering extends from July to September. The large, very double, 5 to 7 cm in diameter flowers in soft green to greenish cream are scattered along the flower stalks.
Anecdote: In Japan, Lisianthus symbolises gratitude and is among the most appreciated cut flowers.

In the garden, plant Lisianthus F1 Cessna Green III in small groups in the foreground or middle ground of sunny borders, near a path or a seating area to enjoy its elegance. Its soft green colour pairs well with whites, cream tones and cool pastels. In well-drained soil enriched with mature compost, it can be planted in rows dedicated to cut flowers; in a 20-25 cm diameter pot, use an aerated substrate, water regularly but not excessively, and turn the container to keep the branching balanced. Pair it with seasonal perennials such as white gauras and the gypsophilas for their lightness, or with annuals chosen for their soft tones: Zinnia ‘Envy Double’ornamental tobacco ‘Perfume White’, Cosmos ‘Xanthos’, Echinacea ‘Green Envy’. These companions highlight its green shades in flower beds as well as in cut flower arrangements.

Planting and care

How to sow the coated seeds of Lisianthus F1 Cessna Green III:
Under a bright and heated shelter: January to March for summer flowering (allow 12–15 weeks before planting out). Sowing is possible from December for well-equipped amateurs. Professionals under a heated greenhouse: in October-November to advance the season.
In very mild climates, a sowing in August-September can be attempted under protection for an early planting in spring.

Sow on the surface, without covering them, in a fine, sterile potting compost (pH 6.3–6.8) kept uniformly moist, but never waterlogged; they need light to germinate. Ideal temperatures: 20–22°C until emergence (10–20 days), under a lid or film to retain humidity, then 18–20°C with good ventilation and 14–16 hours of light.

Water by capillary action, provide a gentle feed (complete fertiliser at low strength) and transplant into plug plants when the seedlings have 2–3 true leaves, handling the root ball without breaking the roots. Harden them off for 10 to 14 days (gradually more light and air) before planting out after all risk of frost.
In open ground, choose a plot in full sun where the soil is well-draining and fertile, deeply loosened; plant at 15–20 cm spacing, mulch to retain moisture, install a support net if the site is exposed to wind, and water regularly at first, then more spaced out once the roots have established. Maintain steady growth with small applications of potassium-rich fertiliser (avoid excesses of ammoniacal nitrogen), monitor ventilation to limit Botrytis and damping off, and intervene quickly against aphids and thrips.
In pots, use a container of at least 25–30 cm, with drainage holes, filled with an airy substrate (quality potting compost + 20–30% perlite or pozzolana); water when the top 2 cm are dry, allow to drain, and feed every 2–3 weeks at a light dose or with a slow-release fertiliser. Pinching is not essential for cutting (it delays flowering), but can be attempted very early (4–6 pairs of leaves) on potted subjects to encourage some decorative branching.

Growing temperatures after planting: 16–18°C at night and 18–24°C during the day; avoid heat stress and water on the flowers.
For harvesting, cut when the first flower is open, or the buds are well coloured; remove lower leaves, recut the stems and place them quickly in clean water: vase life is excellent if the plant has grown without water stress.
