Description

Salvia nemorosa 'Rose Queen' is a perennial woodland sage variety distinguished by its early and perpetual flowering, in the form of bright pink flower spikes, above dark green aromatic foliage. This hardy, drought-tolerant plant is perfect for borders, edging, and windy gardens. Its elegance and ease of cultivation make it a reliable choice for all gardens. This sage also serves as a good nectar source for bees.

Salvia nemorosa 'Rose Queen' (synonym 'Rosakönigin') is a horticultural selection. It is a perennial plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. The species, woodland sage, is native to Central Europe and Western Asia, where it naturally grows in meadows and forest edges. The 'Rose Queen' variety is a cultivar appreciated for its robustness and prolonged flowering. It reaches a height of 50 cm and approximately 40 cm in width, forming a bushy clump from a rosette of oval, toothed, dark green leaves. These slightly rough to the touch leaves persist in winter and emit a pleasant scent when crushed.

The flowering of the 'Rose Queen' cultivar starts as early as May and continues in successive waves until September, provided faded spikes are removed. The bright pink flowers with purple hues are clustered in compact spikes, surrounded by purple bracts that enhance their brilliance. These bright, dense, nectar-rich spikes particularly attract butterflies. The base of the stems is often tinged with red.

Salvia nemorosa 'Rose Queen' is an excellent perennial for borders, edging, and flower beds. In the garden, it forms colourful and aromatic low-maintenance carpets. It pairs perfectly with other easy and generous perennials like Hardy Geranium 'Rozanne', Nepeta 'Walker's Low', Echinacea purpurea 'Magnus', and Achillea millefolium 'Paprika'.

With over 900 species of annuals, perennials, and soft-wooded shrubs distributed worldwide, excluding very cold regions and tropical forests, the Salvia genus is the richest in the Lamiaceae family.

Planting and care

To successfully sow Salvia nemorosa 'Rose Queen', start by sowing the seeds indoors between February and April. Fill pots or a tray with fine, well-drained soil, such as seed compost. Sow the seeds on the surface without burying them too deeply, as they require some light to germinate. Lightly moisten the substrate with a sprayer and cover the container with a transparent lid or a glass plate to create a greenhouse effect. Place it in a warm and bright location, ideally at a temperature of around 18 to 20°C. Germination usually takes between 2 and 4 weeks. Once the seedlings are sufficiently developed and have a few leaves, transplant them into individual pots until planting them in the ground.

Cultivation:

Plant Salvia nemorosa 'Rose Queen' in May, after the last frost. Choose a sunny location where the plant can receive 6 to 8 hours of direct light per day. The soil should be well-drained, light, rather chalky, even quite poor and dry. Before planting, work the soil deeply to loosen it and incorporate some compost. Plant the young plants 30 to 40 cm apart, so they have enough room to grow. Water immediately after planting to help the roots establish, then keep the soil slightly moist until recovery. Once established, the plants require little maintenance, as they are quite resistant to drought and difficult conditions. Prune faded flower spikes to promote new flowering and maintain a compact habit.
