Description
Sweet Pea or Lathyrus odoratus Spring Sunshine™ 'Above the Clouds Mix' is a delightful pastel blend from this new range offering varieties that are both early and heat-resistant, suitable for the Mediterranean climate. The flowers are fragrant and the plants are vigorous and very floriferous, with long stems. They make excellent cut flowers. 'Above the Clouds Mix' consists of various pastel-coloured varieties from the series including 'Lilac', 'Peach', 'White', 'Mauve', for example. This mix forms a climbing annual plant with large development and abundant flowering on strong stems. It is equally suited for pot cultivation in a veranda or greenhouse.
Lathyrus odoratus is an annual herbaceous plant from the Fabaceae family, native to the southeast of Italy and Sicily. The Spring Sunshine series stands out for its premium performance for very early flowering. It can reach 2 m in height and 40 cm in width within a few months. Its light green leaves are paired on quadrangular stems, with stipules at the base and extended into tendrils. Flowering occurs between April and June. The butterfly-like flowers are large, in axillary clusters, pastel-coloured with slightly wavy petals. They consist of 5 petals, with the uppermost, also the largest, forming a banner shape, while the others have an intermediate shape between lip and tube. They emit a delicate, feminine fragrance, with a sweet floral aroma with hints of honeyed and musky tones. The fruit is a flat pod that twists to expel its seeds at a distance. It is essential to remove faded flowers, as seed production immediately stops flowering. Sweet peas root deeply in the soil to draw water and nutrients.
The 'Above the Clouds Mix' sweet pea thrives in hot, sunny locations with well-drained soil, even rocky soil. Its charming, old-fashioned flowering brings an undeniable charm to bouquets and hanging baskets as well as to any available support it quickly covers. It is also ideal for beds, using neighbouring plants or shrubs as support. For a harmonious garden, pair sweet peas with coreopsis, echinaceas, gauras and annuals such as poppies or cosmos. This plant also creates magnificent carpets by combining colours of different varieties. It fits perfectly in cottage gardens or as a floral addition in the vegetable garden or even in a cutting garden, providing an abundant supply of flowers.

Planting and care
This Sweet Pea 'Above the Clouds Mix' from the Spring Sunshine range, due to its early flowering, requires specific sowing advice.
Sow the Sweet Pea seeds in pots and under shelter (in a cold frame in mild regions or indoors at 10°C elsewhere) in September or October, in groups of 2 or 3 seeds, 2.5 cm deep. When the seedlings have reached the stage of the second pair of leaves, pinch the tip of the growth in the usual way to encourage strong lateral shoot. Do not cut, as this may kill the plant or result in a long wait before other shoots are produced. Keep the soil moist.
Autumn sowing produces the sturdiest plants. Alternatively, you can sow the seeds under shelter 10 to 12 weeks before the last frost and plant them in the ground just before the last frost.
When transplanting, leave a minimum distance of 30 cm between two plants. A sunny location, a flowering plant fertiliser, and the removal of faded flowers will promote abundant flowering. Provide a trellis or sturdy support for the plants to climb. Regular watering at the start will accelerate its growth.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
