Beautiful flowering, well-branched vine-plant. However, requires quite abundant watering during periods of drought.

Description

French marigold 'Tomato Growing Secret' is an ideal variety for growing as a companion plant in the vegetable garden as it is particularly effective in repelling whitefly, resulting in better yields. All summer long, it produces masses of double orange and yellow blooms over scented green foliage. French marigolds are incredibly easy to grow and gratifying. Ideal for organic vegetable gardens or summer beddings schemes. Grow in well-drained soil, in full sun to part shade.

Tagetes patula, commonly known as French Marigold, is an annual herbaceous plant that belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is native to the tropical regions of the North America and South America from Mexico to Bolivia. It is not very cold hardy, generally treated as an annual in colder climates. 'Tomato Growing Secret' quickly forms a small, bushy clump, about 25-30 cm in all directions. The dark green, deeply divided leaves have an intense aroma that repels pests such as whitefly, nematodes, aphids and ants and keeps weeds such as bindweed at bay. It flowers continuously from June-July to October providing spent flowers are removed regularly. This variety features fully double flowerheads that measure about 5 cm in diameter. They are composed of numerous bright orange and yellow ray flowers. French marigolds self-seed easily however the new plants are not always true to type.

Marigolds are star plants in summer flower beds. Brightly coloured and cheerful with a tidy habit, easy to grow and floriferous, they are ideal for borders and window boxes. They can be planted in small patches alongside grey-leaved mugwort and stachys, green-leaved tansies or Kochia Childsii, or small ornamental grasses which will soften their flamboyant colours. Their orange, yellow or red blooms mix well with blue-flowering catmints or perennial flax.

Good to know: French marigold flowers are edible and can be enjoyed in salads, soups and desserts. Some people describe their flavour as reminiscent of passion fruit. The intensely aromatic leaves and the substances secreted by their roots repel various harmful insects, making marigolds an excellent companion plant in the vegetable garden.

Planting and care

Sowing:

Sow from February to April.

Sow on the surface of a special sowing compost, moist and well-drained. Cover the seeds with a very thin layer of vermiculite or compost. Place the seedlings in a mini greenhouse or seal them in a polyethylene bag at a constant temperature of 20 to 25°C until germination, which usually takes 7 to 21 days. Do not deprive them of light, as this promotes germination.

When the young plants are large enough to handle, transplant them into a terrine or 8 cm pots. Acclimate them to cooler conditions for 10 to 15 days before watering and planting them outdoors at a distance of 15 - 20 cm from each other, as soon as there is no longer a risk of frost.

Cultivation:

These fast-growing plants thrive in sunny and warm conditions. Plant them in fertile, well-drained, and light soil. Avoid excessive watering in summer, as it promotes the development of fungal diseases and root rot. Regularly remove faded flowers to prolong flowering. Protect the plants from slugs and snails, which are fond of them.
