Description

Clematis 'Hagelby Pink' is a beautiful Italian climbing clematis, reaching 3m (10ft) high. It adorns fences and other supports with beautiful trailing pink bells with yellow anthers.

This robust climber develops deciduous leaves with 3 dark green, oval leaflets, measuring 8cm (3in) long. They are carried by twisting stems that twine around their support with tendrils. From June to August, beautiful single flowers with 4 tepals, in pendulous, closed, pink bells with yellow anthers, 5cm (2in) in diameter, grow on the current year's branches.

Clematis 'Hagelby Pink' thrives in clay-siliceous, light, deep, moist, and fertile soil, in a sunny location with shade at the base. To achieve this, plant ground cover plants. Beware of aphids!

Clematis 'Hagelby Pink' will bring a light and modern touch when grown through a shrub.

Tips: Avoid excessive fertiliser applications that stimulate foliage at the expense of flowers. Do not mulch, to prevent excessive moisture that can promote clematis wilt.

Planting and care

Clematis 'Hagelby Pink' should be planted in spring or autumn, 8cm (3in) deep, with the root ball placed flat on the soil instead of vertically as usual. The head should be in the sun and the foot in the shade. Cover the base with a small mound of soil to encourage new shoots. After planting, prune the stems to 30cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of healthy buds. Train them loosely to help the plant attach itself. Each March, cut back all the stems from the previous year to 20cm (8in) from the ground, above a pair of buds.
