I have been using them in particular in front of the house (facing south) for decades. They don't grow as well outside of full sun. Sometimes replaced: not contained by pruning, they become real trees, a bit fragile during storms (unless trained), and with a relatively short lifespan... for trees! But their size can be controlled, and they are extraordinary during the flowering, very abundant, which repeat. So people ask me for their name... but apparently it surprises them, it is difficult to remember!

Description

The Fremontodendron californicum is characterized by magnificent golden flowering in spring and early summer. In hotter areas, its flowering lasts longer. The brightness of the flower is accentuated by the sun reflecting on its slightly waxy golden yellow petals. This rambling bush has evergreen to semi-evergreen foliage. The leaves are dark green and paler on the underside. The California fremontia has a naturally dense and rounded habit, but it can be trained along a sunny wall. This technique has the advantage of protecting it from wind and rain as it does not like moisture at its base. It also improves its hardiness and allows its cultivation in regions with cold and dry winters. it is hardy down to -12°C.

Fremontodendron californicum is still very rare in cultivation, so it is an impressively original plant.

Planting and care

Handle your Fremontodendron californicum with gloves as the young shoots and the undersides of the leaves are covered in small allergenic and irritating hairs for some people. Feel free to put rocks, gravel, and sand in the planting hole for this bush as it can't tolerate excessive moisture, which causes its roots to rot. Plant it in autumn in full sun, sheltered from the wind. Once established, do not water it anymore. Its natural habit does not require any particular pruning. However, if you want to train it against a wall, prune at the end of winter in March or April when the vegetation starts again. Remove at most only a quarter of the length of the branches.
