Description
Clematis Madame Blanc (‘Zo24005’) belongs to the group of early large-flowered clematis or Patens hybrids, sought after for their decorative flowering in early summer. Not very tall, but floriferous, this small climber will adorn trellises, arches, and shrubs. Its pure white flowering brightens up partially shaded scenes, and its compact size also suits urban gardens. A compact alternative to the great white classics, ideal for small spaces or terraces.
A climbing plant from the Ranunculaceae family, this ‘Zo24005’ cultivar is marketed under the name Madame Blanc. The breeder is the J. van Zoest nursery located in Boskoop, the Netherlands. It is a climbing plant that clings via its petioles. In the ground, it reaches approximately 2m in height with a spread of 0.80m to 1m; in a pot, its growth remains a little lower. The medium green foliage is deciduous, divided into ovate to lanceolate leaflets. The main flowering period is from June to July; the flowers are single, 10 to 12 cm in diameter, composed of 6 broad, entirely white tepals surrounding a cluster of cream to pale yellow stamens. If lightly pruned out after the first flowering, the plant may flower again in late summer. Its is hardy to around −20 °C.
Plant this small Clematis Madame Blanc in morning sun or partial shade, with the base shaded by low-growing perennials, on a trellis, arch, or a shrub with light foliage. To grow it in a container, use a pot 35–40 cm in diameter. Pair ‘Madame Blanc’ with red climbing roses for contrast or with variegated dogwoods, compact lilacs, not very tall Fargesia bamboos... Combine it with other white clematis like ‘Huldine’, ‘Guernsey Cream’ or ‘Henryi’ to extend the flowering period of your display, or with ‘Prince Charles’ to create a blue counterpoint.

Planting and care
Plant Clematis Madame Blanc ‘Zo24005’ in spring or early autumn in loose, humus-bearing, and well-drained soil, burying the collar 3 to 5 cm deep to encourage the emergence of new stems; tilt the root ball 10–15° towards the support and provide a trellis of wires or sticks 5–10 mm thick that the petiolate leaves can grasp. Space about 60–80 cm apart from other climbing plants, water at planting and regularly in the first year without waterlogging the soil; mulch the base or shade it with low-growing perennials to retain coolness.
In a pot with a minimum diameter of 35–40 cm, use a mixture of garden soil + mature compost + mineral drainage material, water thoroughly, then allow to drain, and protect the root ball from severe frost in winter by insulating the container.
Apply a layer of compost in spring and, if needed, a low-nitrogen organic fertiliser; avoid severe pruning.
Regularly guide the young stems, monitor excess water, aerate the foliage to limit powdery mildew. In case of clematis wilt, cut cleanly below the affected area to restart growth from the crown.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
