Description

Graptosedum Bronze, also known as x Vera Higgins Graptosedum or Alpenglow, is a succulent appreciated for its beautiful bronze foliage with golden highlights. Its flat, narrow, pointed, lanceolate leaf rosettes wrap around the stems. They display a pink-bronze colour, with golden highlights on the older leaves. This succulent flowers in June in clusters of 4-petaled flowers, pink in buds and yellow when they open. It is an easy-to-grow perennial that requires a very bright exposure and well-draining soil that remains dry in winter. However, it is quite tolerant of dry shade (although its foliage will turn green) and can tolerate some humidity, as well as drought, in non-scorching sunlight. Moderately hardy, it can withstand frosts down to -8 to -10°C (17.6 to 14°F). It is suitable for planting in the ground, in sunny rockeries, or in pots to be stored in a conservatory.

Graptosedum is a succulent perennial that belongs to the family of Crassulaceae, recognisable by their compact rosettes of very graphic leaves. It is a succulent plant that is particularly sensitive to excess water, requiring well-drained soil and a very bright exposure. x Graptosedum Bronze is a horticultural hybrid resulting from the cross-breeding between Graptopetalum paraguayense and Sedum stahlii. This plant develops compact rosettes along a short stem that tends to bend under the weight of the foliage. It reaches 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8in) in height and about 30 cm (12in) in width. The leaves are fleshy, very thick, rigid, and measure up to 2.5 cm (1in). The flowering takes place in June in clusters of 4-petaled yellow flowers.

Plant x Graptosedum Bronze in rockeries, on a well-drained slope, at the edge of the patio, at the base of a wall, in pots that you can move according to the seasons. Alternatively, plant it in a hanging position where it cascades. Create varied foliage effects by using different colours or shapes with Sedums or other succulent plants such as Sempervivums, for example.

Planting and care

Plant x Graptosedum Bronze in a pot or in open ground in April or May. It can be planted in full sun or in bright partial shade, in well-drained, light, sandy to gravelly soil that is fairly dry. This succulent can tolerate frost down to -8 to -10°C (17.6 to 14°F) in well-drained soil that remains perfectly dry in winter. However, avoid excessively arid conditions and scorching sunlight, especially behind a glass window. Use a substrate for succulent plants that is both draining and not too poor: a mixture of leaf compost, pumice, and coconut fibre. Regular but moderate watering is necessary throughout the growing season, especially during summer, when the substrate should be allowed to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter. Protect the plant from frost or bring it indoors to a bright location (sunroom) at +5°C (41°F).
