Description

Carex muskingumensis 'Little Midge' is a robust miniature grass with dark green foliage. It bears a unique and extravagant appearance.

A small grass with incomparable design, Carex muskingumensis 'Little Midge' forms a triangle. The dark green and shiny leaves become chartreuse green when exposed to the sun. They are arranged in groups of 3, on a short stem. For some, this curious architecture evokes that of palm leaves.

Being small in size, this miniature carex slowly expands, forming clumps 30cm (12in) in height and 30cm (12in) in width. It is hardy and can withstand the most intense cold. It grows in partial shade, in moist to wet soil. When grown in full sun, it should be planted in moist soil, even in summer.

Well suited for container gardening, 'Little Midge' can also be planted along a moist bank or at the edge of a partially shaded flower bed, alongside hostas, small ferns, and heucheras.

It is loved for its great hardiness despite its exotic look.

Planting and care

Plant in a hole measuring 20x20x20cm (8x8x8in). If your soil is heavy, mix some compost with the crumbled soil, partially fill the hole, and place your plant so that the top of the root ball is covered with 3cm (1in) of soil. Firmly press the soil down and water generously to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate the establishment of your young plant. Grasses remain decorative all year round but renew their foliage in spring. We recommend cutting back your plants to 10cm (4in) in late January or early February to tidy them and make room for new foliage.
