Description

We offer you a Collection of 3 different varieties of Iberis, 3 baskets of silver, among the most floriferous in a harmony of white, mauve, and pink. These small perennial plants with dark green evergreen foliage transform into flowering and fragrant cushions between April and June. They withstand cold winters and require very little water in summer. A classic feature of rock gardens, you can also plant them above walls, in the gaps of old walls, along pathways, or on a slope. They thrive in sunny, well-drained soil, even limestone, and require little maintenance.

The collection consists of 3 plants:

- x 1 Iberis sempervirens: the botanical species with white flowers, native to the Mediterranean region. This plant sometimes blooms as early as late March, depending on the region.

- x 1 Iberis 'Absolutely Amethyst' ('Ib2401'): a unique horticultural variety with violet spring flowering. It usually blooms 4 weeks after the white-flowered varieties.

- x 1 Iberis sempervirens Pink Ice®: a selection that forms small two-colour, pale pink with a darker center, clusters in April-May.

Plant them in well-drained soil, in full sun, or in pots on a terrace to complement taller plants. Iberis forms cushions not exceeding 15 cm in height and 40 to 50 cm in width. Plant them 40 cm apart to achieve a beautiful coverage in 2-3 years. Count 5 to 6 plants per square metre. Their small, evergreen leaves are an elegant glossy dark green, and their nectariferous flowering attracts many pollinating insects.

The Silver Baskets in this collection create pastel spots in rocky areas where the soil is shallow. They can be planted between the stones of a rock garden, on a sun-exposed slope, or at the front of a raised bed (a 20 cm difference in elevation is sufficient). Above walls, these small perennials are fabulous. They also work well in balcony planters. To accompany them, consider, for example, rock cresses that bloom at the same time, as well as small creeping sedums with colorful foliage (Sedum 'Chocolate Ball', Sedum 'Lemon Ball', etc.). By adding bloody cranesbills, you can extend the flowering period until summer.

Planting and care

The Iberis can be planted in spring or early autumn (especially in southern Europe), directly in the ground or in a container, in a sunny location. It can also tolerate some light shade in the afternoon in hot climates.

It can withstand and even prefers poor, even limestone, rocky or sandy soil. If you plant it in richer or slightly heavier soil, make sure to add some gravel or coarse sand during planting, as it is averse to stagnant water, especially in winter, which will reduce its resistance to cold.

This plant requires little maintenance. You can simply remove faded flowers by lightly pruning it if you want to maintain a more compact habit.
