Description

Alocasia ‘Yucatan Princess’, a variety of Elephant's Ear, is a queen in the realm of indoor plants. With its large green leaves featuring glossy highlights and purple stems, this majestic variety boasts a striking exotic presence. Stunning in modern, bohemian, or exotic interiors, it creates a lush jungle atmosphere. Place it in a bright room, away from direct sunlight, and in a slightly humid environment to maintain the lustre of its leaves.

Alocasia ‘Yucatan Princess’ belongs to the Araceae family, home to many spectacular tropical species. It is a horticultural variety derived from the botanical species Alocasia sarawakensis, native to Borneo. This upright perennial plant can reach 1.20 m to 1.50 m in height and an impressive spread. Its elongated heart-shaped leaves can grow up to 50 cm in length. Deep green and glossy, they feature a slightly waffled texture and prominent veins. The growth rate of this Alocasia is moderate to fast. Its long, upright, purple petioles contrast beautifully with the foliage. It rarely flowers indoors, but its white or cream inflorescences, similar to those of the peace lily, may occasionally appear on mature specimens under optimal conditions. This plant is toxic to both animals and humans if ingested. In the wild, Alocasia sarawakensis thrives in the humid tropical forests of Borneo, explaining its preference for bright, humid, and warm environments. Indoors, it requires indirect light, consistent humidity, and stable temperatures (between 18 and 25°C). It cannot tolerate temperatures below 10°C but can be placed outdoors in summer, away from scorching sunlight.

Alocasia ‘Yucatan Princess’ fits into many decor styles. Its elegance will be appreciated in a contemporary living room or office. To create a tropical or jungle vibe, place it in a terracotta pot on a light wood stand paired with a Monstera deliciosa and a Philodendron ‘White Measure’, for example. It also finds a place in a bright conservatory among rattan furniture or natural textiles. In a more industrial or Art Deco setting, opt for a black or gold metal pot to accentuate its chic appeal. Place it on a polished concrete floor or near a dark wood shelf, and play with heights by positioning it alongside a Calathea orbifolia or a Ficus 'Robusta'.

Mix a universal potting compost with clay pebbles or perlite for good drainage.
Apply a fertiliser for green plants, rich in nitrogen (NPK 10-5-5), every 4 weeks in spring and summer.

Houseplant care
