Description

The Ficus 'Robusta' (Ficus elastica Robusta), commonly known as Rubber Plant, is a large houseplant prized for its lush foliage and easy care. Its large ovate, deep green, glossy leaves exude a tropical charm. This somewhat "stiff"-looking plant will appeal to fans of contemporary decor, in a spacious living room or bright office. To maintain the lustre of its foliage, it is recommended to regularly wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove any dust.

Belonging to the Moraceae family, the Robusta Rubber Plant is a horticultural variety selected for its hardiness and imposing foliage. At maturity, the plant typically reaches between 1 m and 1.50 m in height with a spread of 60 cm to 1 m, featuring an upright and elegant habit. Its ovate, thick and leathery leaves measure between 20 and 30 cm long, displaying a smooth texture and uniform dark green colour. Although flowering is rare indoors, when it occurs, it manifests as small, discreet inflorescences of little ornamental value. The plant is toxic if ingested by animals and humans. Take precautions during pruning or prolonged handling.

Native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, particularly India and Malaysia, the Ficus elastica grows naturally in warm, humid environments, often in undergrowth, which explains its preference for indirect light and fairly moist ambient air indoors.

The Ficus 'Robusta' is a centrepiece in interior decoration, instantly creating a sophisticated tropical ambiance. It blends well with contemporary, Scandinavian or rustic styles. Placed in a minimalist ceramic pot or on a natural wooden stand, this plant will form a focal point in your decor. To create a harmonious display, pair it with a Monstera deliciosa and a Philodendron scandens, which share similar needs in terms of light and humidity. These plants will form a lush, soothing green corner.

Maintenance and care

Water moderately once a week. Allow the top layer of the compost to dry out between waterings. In winter, reduce to watering every two weeks.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, in spring
Use a light potting mix enriched with organic matter, with a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot to prevent water stagnation.
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser (NPK 10-10-10) every 4 weeks during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

This variety is relatively clean, rarely losing its leaves. However, be sure to clean the foliage to remove dust.
Simply remove any yellowed or damaged leaves at the base to maintain a harmonious habit. If the plant becomes too large, you can prune the main stems in early spring to control its growth and encourage denser branching.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in soapy water and isolate the plant until the parasitic pests disappear.
