Description

Anemone canadensis, or American meadow anemone, is a vigorous perennial plant with gracefully cut foliage and bright white spring flowerss. It naturally thrives in wet areas, where it quickly forms extensive clumps. Perfect for creating groundcover in semi-shaded and moist corners of the garden!

Anemone canadensis belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. It is native to Canada, where it is very common in woodland areas, wet meadows, and along watercourses. It forms a dense and branching clump, reaching 30 to 60 cm (12 to 24in) in height and 40 cm (16in) in width. The flowering takes place in May-June in the form of white flowers with a greenish centre and small yellow stamens. They measure between 2.5 and 3.5 cm (1in) in diameter. The fruits resemble an inverted strawberry before becoming feathery. This anemone grows from a caudex, a swollen base stem serving as a storage organ. The medium green leaves form a collar around the stem. Each leaf is divided into several long and pointed lobes, and sometimes the lobes subdivide further.

Anemone canadensis prefers moisture and partial shade and requires well-drained soil. Plant it in a shady rock garden, on paved gardens, as a border, in a partially sunny moist location. Give it space, and if it likes it, it will eventually form bright groundcover with touching simplicity that will grow in the garden for a long time.
