Description
Campanula MINI MARVELS™ ‘Twilight’ is a miniature Carpathian bellflower that brings a lovely play of contrasting blue and white to the foreground of borders and in rockeries. This creeping perennial forms small, regular, very floriferous cushions, covered in little bells throughout the summer. It is easy to grow, a reliable choice for alpine gardens or cool temperate climates.
Campanula carpatica, the Carpathian bellflower, belongs to the Campanulaceae family. This botanical species, native to the Carpathian mountain range in Central and Eastern Europe (Czech Republic-Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Serbia, Croatia), grows naturally in scree, limestone cliffs and stony meadows at medium to high altitudes, up to approximately 2,500 m. It is a very hardy herbaceous perennial, down to at least -20 °C.
The cultivar MINI MARVELS™ ‘Twilight’ is a selection from the American nursery Walters Gardens, distributed under the Proven Winners brand since 2025. It is part of the MINI MARVELS™ series, which includes several extremely compact Carpathian bellflowers, not exceeding 15 to 20 cm in height and about 30 cm in width. ‘Twilight’ is distinguished by its bicolour flowering: the corollas are indigo blue to violet-blue around a pure white, highly contrasting centre. The plant forms a dense cushion, composed of thin, very closely spaced stems. Its growth is rapid: the plant reaches its optimum development in two to three years.
The heart-shaped to rounded, finely toothed leaves measure 2 to 4 cm long and are medium to dark green, slightly glossy. In temperate climates, the foliage is often semi-evergreen: it remains present during mild winters. The slender but numerous floral stems bear solitary flowers, in open cups or flared bells, 2 to 3 cm in diameter, facing upwards. Flowering begins in May-June and continues until August, or even longer if faded flowers are regularly removed.
Like other Carpathian bellflowers, MINI MARVELS™ ‘Twilight’ likes neutral to slightly calcareous, light to stony soil, moist to moderately dry in summer, but dislikes stagnant water in winter.
Particularly compact and floriferous, MINI MARVELS™ ‘Twilight’ is perfect at the edge of paths, on the fringe of a border or atop low walls. In a rockery, it weaves between stones and trails slightly over rocks. Also, use it to fill the base of a plant in a large pot. To create a durable carpet, pair it with creeping stonecrops such as Sedum spurium ‘Variegatum’ or Sedum cauticola 'Lidakense', which take over in late summer. You can add Phlox subulata ‘Atropurpurea’ with its very bright pink. For a tone-on-tone combination, consider Carpathian bellflower ‘Blaue Clips’.

Planting and care
Campanula carpatica Mini Marvels Twilight appreciates moist to not too dry soils, light, even calcareous and stony, but dislikes stagnant moisture, which causes its roots to rot. It needs perfectly drained, yet slightly moist soil to thrive. Plant it in non-scorching sun, or in partial shade, sheltered from strong winds which dry it out. This alpine plant does not appreciate overly hot climates, nor too dry summers. Be vigilant for slug and snail attacks in spring. They can destroy a young plant that is not yet well established. Use non-toxic baits for them... or adopt toads which are also fond of slugs and snails!

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
