Description

Campanula Iridescent Bells is a new variety whose long flowering period is a feast for the eyes. Its iridescent bells are silver, washed with mauve and appear from summer to autumn alongside dark violet silky buds. The entire plant transforms into a living bouquet with subtle and refined shades. Give this robust perennial a prominent place in your borders and beds, or even in a pot.

The Campanula genus belongs to the Campanulaceae family. The species C. punctata is native to Korea and Japan where it grows in sunny mountains. The 'Iridescent Bells' selection, derived from this species, has a clump-like habit, reaching 40 cm (16in) in all directions. It spreads through short underground rhizomes from which erect leafy stems emerge. The show begins in early summer when it forms long stems up to 80 cm (32in) tall, bearing up to 30 silky-textured, dark purple buds followed by beautiful elongated 5 cm (2in) long bells. The flowers of this variety are very refined, single, pale lavender and silver, truly iridescent at the edge of the corolla. They continue until September if the faded stems are removed and are highly attractive to bees. The foliage is deciduous but persists for a long time before disappearing, dark green and slightly hairy. The leaves turn more purple in autumn.

Campanula Iridescent Bells is hardy and easy to grow, it likes bright exposures, and tolerates partial shade, as well as moist, rich, and well-draining soils. When it's happy, it produces moderate suckers. In a wild or romantic style garden, associate it with perennial geraniums, English roses, Polemonium, and ornamental garlic, for example. It also performs very well in a pot. Its romantic and soft flowers are perfect for bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant hybrid campanula 'Iridescent Bells' in a sunny spot in rich and moist soil, even chalky, well-drained and deeply dug. In heavy soil, incorporate leaf compost when planting. Do not rely on the size of the plant in the pot staying the same: give it the space you would give to a small bush, as it grows quickly! Prune the faded  stems at the end of flowering to promote the appearance of new flowers in September. For container planting, apply organic fertilizer at least once a year.
