Campanulate plants planted in autumn; with the arrival of spring, it can be seen that the recovery is excellent. On older plants, I had observed a long and truly captivating flowering. The very large violet bells are quite charming.

Description

Campanula Sarastro is a beautiful bushy perennial that forms elegant elongated bells of a very lovely intense blue in early summer.

Like Campanula takesimana and Campanula Kent Belle, this bushy variety has an earlier flowering and much larger and longer flowers.

From June, the Sarastro bellflower forms intense blue elongated bells, 7cm (3in) in length. The flowering lasts until the end of summer, provided the faded flower stalks are regularly cut.

It is easy to grow and appreciates sunny exposures and moist, rich, and well-drained soils. When it is happy, its crown suckers moderately.

In a wild garden or in a more romantic style, associate the Sarastro bellflower with perennial geraniums, English roses, Polemonium, and ornamental garlic.

Planting and care

Plant Sarastro campanula in a sunny location with rich, moist soil that has been deeply worked. Don't be fooled by the size of the plant in the pot: give it the space you would give to a small bush, as it grows quickly! You should prune the stems at the end of flowering to encourage the emergence of new flowers in September. For container planting, apply organic fertilizer at least once a year.
