More information

Duo of Irish heathers composed of the shrub species with pink flowers and its 'Alba' form with white flowers. These evergreen undershrubs have a low, dense and flexible habit and offer a long summer flowering period composed of large bell-shaped flowers, clearly visible against the foliage mass. When exposed to sunlight and planted in a moist acidic soil, these heathers form a charming ground cover for rockeries and borders.

Description

We offer you a duo of Daboetia cantabrica or Irish heathers that differ in the colour of their summer flowering. The species, Daboetia cantabrica, displays large pink flowers, while they are pure white in its 'Alba' form. A long summer flowering period from June-July to September-October, composed of large melliferous bells, clearly visible on the mass of foliage. These are low, evergreen shrubs that have a great effect on rockeries, slopes, and sunny borders. They should be grown in non-calcareous (acidic), not too dry soil.

The pair consists of:

1 Daboetia cantabrica: flowering in a fresh pink

1 Daboetia cantabrica 'Alba': white flowering

The cantabrian heather is a small, low-growing shrub. It is hardy, tolerant of very poor and very acidic soils and attractive even in winter, ideal for landscaping coastal or medium mountain gardens if the soil allows it. This heather appreciates full sun and heat, which intensifies its flowering, but cannot tolerate limestone, very clayey or dry soils. The soil its planted in should be peaty, humus-bearing, loamy, or sandy and remain slightly moist in summer. Plan 4 plants per m² for good ground cover after 3-4 years of cultivation.

It can be used in an alpine-style garden, but also by the sea, planted en masse alternating the colours to carpet a rockery, a sandy slope where few plants will grow. To accompany it, consider Spanish thrifts (Armeria maritima) and other heathers like Calluna. It can also be grown in a pot on the terrace or balcony with its slightly wild appearance and long flowering period: choose a sufficiently large container and keep the substrate (exclusively acidic) always slightly moist.

Planting and care

Daboecia cantabrica should be planted in a sunny position, in acidic soil (peaty, humus-bearing, loamy, sandy) that remains moist in summer. Never plant in pure peat soil, as it does not retain enough water. Plant carefully and water during the first two years: if the root ball dries out while the root system is still underdeveloped, the plant will die. Apply mulch during planting to prevent the growth of weeds and maintain soil moisture. Afterwards, the plant will sufficiently cover the ground to prevent weed growth.

During planting, it is advisable to loosen the root ball a little, trim any excessively long roots, and plant in a hole measuring 30x30 cm, filled with a mixture of peat substitute, ericaceous soil, and coarse sand. Water it once or twice a week (with non-chalky water) depending on the ambient temperature, to keep the soil moist while the plant establishes itself. To maintain a compact habit and increase the lifespan of the heather, it is a good idea to prune back the faded branches to 2-5 cm from the previous year's growth each year after flowering, making sure not to cut below the last green leaves. Fertiliser is not necessary, and it is even discouraged to avoid promoting foliage production at the expense of flowering (heathers are generally plants of poor soils).
