Description
The Geranium x cantabrigiense 'Westray' is a variety that exhibits particularly compact vegetation as well as early and abundant flowering in a very pretty bright pink. This sturdy little perennial ground cover does not disappoint in flowerbeds, and even in hanging baskets. The plant spreads slowly and develops rounded leaves that take on a beautiful bronze hue in autumn, aromatic when crushed. Its flowering is abundant in spring and can be renewed in summer in not too dry soil. Ideal for natural gardens, it tolerates summer heat.
Geranium x cantabrigiense 'Westray' belongs to the Geraniaceae family. It is a horticultural selection by Alan Bremner (United Kingdom). This variety comes from a natural hybrid called Geranium x cantabrigiense. The parents of the latter are Geranium dalmaticum from the Balkan coasts and G. macrorrhizum, a southern plant accustomed to dry summers. 'Westray' is a moderately hardy herbaceous perennial, down to approximately -12 °C (10.4°F). It forms a compact carpet reaching 15 to 25 cm (6 to 10in) in height and spreads laterally thanks to its stolons, to approximately 40 cm (16in) in width. Its growth is quite slow. It produces countless small fragrant flowers in spring, in May-June, in open cups, pink in colour, punctuated by stamens and anthers of a deeper pink. The foliage releases a lemony scent when crushed. Composed of small round and palmate leaves, it has a beautiful vibrant green coloUr during the season and takes on a bronze hue in autumn and winter.
This Westray perennial geranium enjoys the sun but is sensitive to scorching exposures, especially in hot climates. This easy-to-care-for plant requires little maintenance. An excellent ground cover with beautiful robustness, it will quickly add a rustic and coloUrful touch to perennial flower beds and elegantly highlight the curve of a pathway. It will be welcome at the base of your precious plants, as it will not suffocate but rather enhance them with its fuzzy foliage. It will also find its place on balconies, terraces, flowerbeds, rockeries and borders, where it will prove to be a faithful companion to columbines, peonies, and bellflowers, for example.

Planting and care
Install Geranium cantabrigiense Westray in a hole 20 cm (8in) deep and wide, crumbling the soil well and adding a base amendment like dried blood or crushed horn. Position your plant, freed from its pot, by covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, fill in and water generously to eliminate air pockets. Choose a sunny but not scorching site, or partial shade (light shade in the afternoon). If planted in dry weather it is necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root development. In case of a dry and hot summer, periodic watering will also be appreciated.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
