Rock Rose
The young plant arrived two weeks ago in excellent condition with fleshy grey-green leaves. It was quickly potted as I haven't yet decided on its permanent location, and it remains healthy despite the cold and rain.

Description
Helianthemum 'Bronzeteppich' is a superb variety of rockrose that offers a long flowering period in warm colours. Its small bronze orange flowers bloom from May to September on delicate foliage of a beautiful dark ash green that will persist if the winter is not too cold. This subshrub, hardy in well-drained soil, forms lovely ground cover for sunny areas of the garden such as a rockery or the top of a wall. It is a good plant for a dry or mineral garden, and will also thrive in a planter on the terrace.
Belonging to the Cistaceae family, Helianthemum 'Bronzeteppich' is a horticultural hybrid resulting from the cross-breeding of H. apenninum, native to southern Europe, and H. mummularium, widespread in Europe and Turkey. Like other varieties of the genus, 'Bronzeteppich' loves limestone, rocky, sandy soils and the sun. It forms a low-growing, dense and creeping subshrub, with a cushion height of 20 cm (8 in) and a width of 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16 in). Its more or less evergreen foliage is composed of tiny linear leaves, dark silver-green in colour, slightly shiny, which highlights its abundant and bright bronze orange flowering, with a dark orange central halo. From May-June to August-September it is covered with a multitude of small flowers measuring 2.5 cm (1 in) in diameter, with simple, slightly crumpled cups, adorned with a cluster of golden to orange stamens. Helianthemum means "flower of the sun" in Greek, an appropriate name for these flowers that only open in bright sunlight. The delicate blooms do not last long, but they constantly renew themselves.
The rockrose is the ideal plant to enhance a rocky garden or sunny slope, to cascade over a wall, or brighten up paving. It will also have a beautiful effect at the front of perennial or raised flowerbeds. It is suitable for cultivation in pots or containers on the terrace. It can be considered for the creation of green walls and green roofs. Combine with other rockery plants (Erigeron, Shrubby Cinquefoil, Shrubby Wallflower), as well as perennial plants such as Lavender, Iris germanica, Cistus, Helenium, Convolvulus cneorum and sabatius, Coreopsis, thymes, creeping rosemary. Its flowers blend delicately with the grey foliage of stachys, dwarf artemisias, and cerastiums (dusty miller).

Planting and care
Easy to grow and low maintenance, Helianthemum 'Bronzeteppich' appreciates full sun in a neutral or alkaline soil, perfectly drained, even occasionally dry, and rich in gravel or sand. Not tolerating stagnant moisture in winter, it will be necessary - especially in cold and humid climates - to lighten the soil during planting by adding gravel, compost, and coarse sand to improve drainage. Helianthemum is a hardy plant that can withstand temperatures between -10 and -20°C depending on the variety. It tolerates drought quite well and only requires regular watering (without excess) during the first year after planting; afterwards, the plant can manage on its own. At the end of flowering, pinch the faded stems and foliage to encourage autumn regrowth. Light pruning of the clump with hedge shears can be done after flowering to maintain dense vegetation and prevent the centre from becoming bare. When young, make sure to protect it from any weeds that might deprive it of moisture or block out the sunlight essential for its health.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
