Description

Native to northwest Turkey,  the Caucasus and northeast Greece, the Dark Oriental Hellebore is a perennial plant with dark pink flowers that will brighten up the shaded areas of your garden in winter. It is a hardy plant that can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F) with palmate, slightly toothed, dark green and shiny evergreen basal leaves, 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in) long, composed of 7 to 9 leaflets.

The Oriental Hellebore reaches a height of 40 cm (16in) at maturity and spreads to 30 cm (12in). From January to March, a bouquet of single, cup-shaped and spreading flowers forms, with a diameter of 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in). Hellebore is a bushy plant which does not like to be moved once established, as the young plants take some time to bloom.

This toxic plant should be handled with caution. It is suitable as cut flowers and in borders, edges or even containers,... Over time, the Hellebore flowers do not wither like the majority of other flowers, but dry up instead. The Dark Oriental Hellebore pairs well with white flowers.

Planting and care

Helleborus Orientalis grows in most soils that are rich and neutral in partial or light shade, sheltered from the wind. Plant from early autumn to spring to bloom from January to March. It thrives in deeply cultivated soil mixed with organic matter. To fertilize, use bone meal or another organic fertilizer. In acidic soil, add a little lime. Water well after planting then add a layer of mulch 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) thick. Regularly remove wilted leaves. Cut most of the leaves to make the flowers stand out. Be careful not to plant the plants too close to each other to promote their development. Hellebore does not like stagnant water as it may cause rot.
