I didn't have any flowers in the nice weather. We'll see for next year.

Description

Paeonia officinalis 'Rubra Plena' perfectly embodies the French expression "red as a peony!" It is THE quintessential peony.

A perennial herbaceous plant with a bushy habit, with upright stems that are slightly villous when young. The foliage is abundant and dark green. The flowers form large globes measuring 14 cm (6 in) in diameter, with double petals that are plicate, forming a large, satiny scarlet pompon that lightens towards the end of the flowering period.

As cut flowers, 'Rubra Plena' peonies will bring colour into your home.

Not very demanding in terms of soil type and exposure, it is quite easy to maintain.

Peonies will thrive when planted alongside lupines, arums, delphiniums, foxgloves, or salvias.

Planting and care

Peonies do not like to be moved, so you have to think carefully about the right place to plant them. The best time to plant them is in autumn. Plant them in the sun or in a bright location, spaced 60 cm (24 in) apart. They need space and are sensitive to competition from other species. Prepare a hole that is 50 x 50 x 50 cm (20 in x 20 in x 20 in), mix organic fertiliser with your soil, partially fill the hole, place your plants and cover with 6 cm (2 in) of soil above the buds. After planting, firm the soil and water generously.

Our secret for beautiful bouquets: cut your peonies at dawn when the buds start to colour.
