Description

The Generosa Rose Bush, 'The Garden's Friend', is a highly scented rose bush that produces large, flat, very double, carmine red roses arranged in clusters of 5 to 7 velvety flowers, enhanced by beautiful dark green foliage. They open up to reveal a bouquet of late-blooming golden yellow stamens, completing this trio of deep and complementary shades with brilliance. The flowering of this Generosa is very perpetual. It is perfect for a garden, whether in a bed or as a standalone plant.

The Generosa roses are modern roses with the appearance of old roses. They combine the charm of old roses with the robustness and long flowering of modern roses. 'The Garden's Friend' Rose Bush is a bushy rose with a rather open habit. As an adult, this rose will reach about 1.2 metres (4 feet) in height and 80 cm (32in) in width. The flowering begins in May and will only stop with the arrival of frost. The plant produces countless buds that bloom into cheerful clusters, where carmine red reigns supreme, crowned with golden stamens visible just before fading. The large flowers are double, flat, 10 cm (4in) wide, divided into quarters. They emit the powerful fragrance of old roses. The foliage is abundant, deciduous, and dark green. This bush is very hardy.

'The Garden's Friend' rose bush stands out with a never-ending and highly scented flowering, with a dazzling red colour under the sun. Some perennial plants and grasses are ideal for enhancing its brilliance and accompanying it late in the season. For example, combine it with campanulas, Geranium macrorrhizum, pink echinaceas, Geranium grandiflorum, Panic, Nepeta 'Walker's Low' or perennial Delphiniums. It will look good as a standalone plant, in large borders, or in a small flowering shrub hedge. Its flowers make splendid bouquets, accompanied by white roses and foxgloves.

Planting and care

Rose bushes need sunlight for 4-5 hours every day, but it's best to protect them from the strong sun and wind. They grow best in loose, permeable soil that is rich in humus. The soil should be well-cultivated and rich enough, but they can also grow in any type of soil.

If you're planting them in a pot, loosen the soil to a depth of 10 inches and add a base amendment like blood, fish and bone at the bottom of the planting hole. Position the plant and cover the top of the root ball with 1 inch of soil. Fill in the hole, press down the soil, and water generously to eliminate air pockets. Water regularly during dry weather for a few weeks to help the roots develop. Use special rose fertilisers to promote flowering.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.
