Description

The Flame Meillandina® Rose is a small floral marvel that brightens borders, patios, and planters with its unique brilliance. With its compact and bushy habit, this miniature rose offers continuous flowering from spring until the first frosts. Its flowers stand out due to a striking colour contrast, featuring a bright yellow centre that appears to ignite into an intense carmine red at the edges of the petals. Their traditional form and velvety texture add a touch of refinement to this small ornamental bush. Perfectly suited to small spaces, it makes an excellent choice for rockeries, balconies, and patios, where it generously displays its flamboyant colours.

Originating from the Meilland collection, this Flame Meillandina® 'Meigenpi' rose belongs to the Rosaceae family and is one of the most popular miniature varieties. Marketed under the name Rainbow Sunblaze in some countries, it is classified within the x polyantha rose group, an old hybrid derived from Rosa multiflora and R. chinensis. The turbinate shape of its flowers however resembles that admired in the blooms of modern grandiflora Hybrid Tea roses. It reaches a modest height of 30 cm, making it ideal for use at the front of flowerbeds or in containers, without ever losing its brilliance. Its dense, light green foliage creates a luminous backdrop that highlights the rich tones of its flowers. Each bloom measures approximately 5 cm in diameter and boasts around 60 petals per flower. Its flowering in clusters of two to five blooms ensures a continuous profusion of vibrant colours, offering a true spectacle until the arrival of cold weather. This rose's good resistance to diseases makes it easy to grow, enabling you to enjoy its impact without tedious maintenance.

The Flame Meillandina® Rose thrives best in full sun, in well-drained, fertile soil. When grown in containers on a patio or balcony, it prefers a light and airy substrate to avoid excess moisture around the roots. Regular but moderate watering is recommended, especially during summer. Light pruning after each wave of flowering encourages new blooms and maintains the rose's compact shape. It pairs harmoniously with other rockery plants or colourful perennials such as lavenders, bellflowers, creeping baby's breath, or hardy geraniums. In borders or planters, it beautifully complements groundcover rose varieties like those from Delbard's 'Border' series, adding a vibrant and warm touch to gardens or balconies.

Planting and care

Flame Meillandina Miniature Roses prefer a sunny position (at least 4 to 5 hours of sunlight per day) but sheltered from the scorching midday rays and strong winds. They thrive in loose, permeable, deep, and fertile soil. They favour neutral to slightly acidic soil but will adapt to any garden provided the ground is well-worked and sufficiently rich. Prepare the soil to a depth of 40 cm, breaking up any clumps well and adding a base amendment such as dried blood or dehydrated horn meal at the bottom of the planting hole. Place your plant, removed from its pot, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm of soil, backfill, and water thoroughly to eliminate any air pockets. During dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to encourage root establishment. Also, remember to feed your rose with a special rose fertiliser to stimulate the plant's flowering.
