Description

The  rosebush 'Gloire des Polyanthas' is one of the very first multiflora hybrids, truly very recurrent, created in 1887 by J.B Guillot fils. This charming historical rosebush, quite rare, surprises with the vigour of its flowering which overwhelms its vegetation from June to autumn. It produces small, double, globular and well-rounded roses, gathered in bouquets splashed with cherry pink, fading to white. With its compact habit and plump roses, it forms a very romantic flowering dome, highlighting the borders and flowerbeds with a frothy festoon for at least 6 months. It will work wonders in a large pot on the terrace or balcony.

The flowers of Rosa 'Gloire des Polyanthas', gathered in terminal bouquets, come from the polyantha rosebush, an old hybrid resulting from Rosa multiflora and Rosa chinensis. 'Gloire des Polyanthas' shows a flexible and spreading bushy habit, wider than tall, partly inclined. It will reach about 40cm (15.7in) in height and 60cm (23.6in) in width in a few years. The double flowers, 5cm (2in) in diameter, well-filled, in the shape of round rosettes, slightly scented, are of a randomly brushed tender pink with a deep pink, becoming white-pink at the end of flowering. They bloom in very large numbers in large pyramidal bouquets, from July to October-November, as long as there is no frost. This vigorous variety, fairly resistant to diseases, can sometimes be a little sensitive to marsonia. It develops a thin, medium green, semi-evergreen foliage, rather matte. Its reddish stems bear thorns.

The rosebush 'Glore des Polyanthas' adapts to all soils that are not too dry and to all climates, which allows it to be welcomed without reservation across a wide climatic range. It can be planted in groups of 3 plants, arranged in a triangle, isolated on a lawn. It will work wonders when planted in mass at the edge of pathways or to highlight shrub beds. It will integrate perfectly with light or opulent perennial beds. For example, it can be associated with perennial geraniums, campanulas, catmints, snapdragons or other Stachys. Left free, its slightly blurry shape is wildly romantic in front of a flowering shrub bed composed of abelias, Kolwitzia or mock oranges for example. It will happily overflow from a large pot on the terrace, balcony, or a flower-filled basin.

Obtained by Guillot in 1887.

Planting and care

Roses prefer a sunny location (at least 4 to 5 hours of sun per day) but sheltered from the burning rays of midday and strong winds. Roses appreciate loose, permeable soils rich in humus. They prefer a slightly acidic soil but will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well cultivated and sufficiently rich. To plant your rose in a pot, work the soil to a depth of 25cm (9.8in) by crumbling the soil and placing a base amendment such as dried blood or dehydrated horn at the bottom of the planting hole. Position your plant, removed from its pot, by covering the top of the root ball with 3cm (1.2in) of soil, fill in and water copiously to remove any air pockets. In dry weather, it is necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root formation. Also, remember to provide your rose with special rose fertilizer that stimulates plant flowering.

Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These stains are not harmful to the rose, it is a natural phenomenon.
