Description

Jatropha integerrima, also known as Peregrina and Spicy jatropha, is an exotic and flowering bush highly appreciated in tropical and subtropical regions. It can only be grown in open ground in very mild climates, as it is frost-sensitive at -3°C (26.6°F). However, it is perfect in pots to overwinter in cooler climates. Forming a bush with several erect trunks, from spring to autumn it produces lovely red flat flowers, gathered in tight inflorescences. Evergreen in mild climates, it tolerates occasionally dry soil and needs full sun in summer.

Jatropha integerrima belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family, and like euphorbias, it produces an irritating sap. It is a botany species native to Cuba, Dominican Republic, and the Antilles that has naturalised well in tropical to subtropical regions, particularly in Africa or India. It forms a bush with several trunks, and well ramified and downy branches. It has a slow growth rate. In pots, it reaches from 1 to 3m (3 to 10ft) in height. In its native region, it reaches up to 4m (13ft). It will flower all year round in tropical climates; elsewhere, flowering takes place between spring and autumn. The flowers, 1.5 to 3cm (1in) wide, are grouped in tight inflorescences, where several male flowers surround 1 or 2 female flowers. The flat flowers, with 5 fused bright red petals, are very bright. The foliage is evergreen in winter in a heated greenhouse, but is deciduous in a cool room or in open ground. It consists of dark green leaves of rather variable shape, with a cordate base, oblong to ovoid shape, and entire to divided into several acuminate lobes. They are alternate, carried by a petiole 5 to 8cm (2 to 3in) long.

Jatropha integerrima is a bush with exotic charm and generous flowering. In very mild climates, it can be grown in the ground. Elsewhere, plant it in pots and place in full sun from spring to autumn. Bring the pot inside to a room of 15°C (5°F). Alternatively, place in a heated greenhouse where it will grow all year round.

Planting and care

Plant in spring, in a very sheltered and sunny location. Choose well-drained, loose, fertile soil. Dig a deep planting hole, and add some compost and sand to your garden soil to improve the soil quality if needed. Water abundantly after planting and in summer, during periods of high heat. You can train it on a single trunk, or keep it quite low with regular pruning.

Pot cultivation:

Choose a large pot (30 to 50 litre volume) with holes in the bottom. Ensure good drainage by placing a layer of gravel, broken clay pots, or clay balls at the bottom. Fill with a compound mix of 1/3 garden soil, 1/3 compost, and 1/3 coarse sand. Store the young plant in a bright room, at about 15°C (5°F) or grow it all year round in a heated greenhouse. In winter, if it is dormant, stop watering.

Damp soil will kill it. Always allow the substrate to dry between waterings. Do not let water stagnate at the bottom of the pot. It doesn't need fertiliser, but appreciates 1 repotting per year.
