Description

Hebe vernicosa, a type of Shrubby Veronica, is an evergreen bush. It has a lovely compact habit and glossy leaves which highlight its white flowers in summer. For dressing up your rockeries, pots, and borders.

Hebe vernicosa belongs to the family of Plantaginaceae. It has a compact, spreading, and dense habit. At maturity, this Speedwell shrub will reach 50 cm (20 in) in height and 90 cm (35 in) in spread. The glossy dark green foliage is composed of densely arranged oval leaves on its stems, making it particularly decorative in addition to being evergreen. During the months of June and July this bush offers beautiful white flowers in spikes at the top of its stems.

This Hebe, hardy down to -7°C (19.4 °F), requires full sun or partial shade. It likes rich or poor, moist, and not too acidic soils. Its average hardiness will require winter protection and good drainage, especially in more northern regions.

Hebe vernicosa pairs well with perennials such as phlox, daylilies, or geraniums. In pots or in front of borders, this Hebe will elegantly add structure to your garden.

Planting and care

In gardens with a wet climate, Hebes should be reserved for rockeries or sloping banks. It enjoys a rich soil that is always well-drained. In the colder regions of Northern Europe it is necessary to protect these shrubs during winter or cultivate them in pots, bringing them indoors during periods of freezing weather. Avoid pruning this small Shrubby Veronica; however it is advisable to clean the Hebe of faded blooms once flowering is over. Remove any dead branches to preserve its compact habit.
