Description
Hydrangea Rebellion® ‘Dark Pink Love’ is a compact and robust variety that blooms reliably, even after a harsh winter. From the beginning of summer, it comes alive with large flower heads that are green at first, gradually turning to an intense dark pink over time. Ideal for small gardens, balconies or patios, it adapts well to both pots and open ground. It flowers on old wood as well as on new growth, and continues into autumn.
Hydrangea macrophylla, native to East Asia (China and Japan), belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family. 'Dark Pink Love’ is a cultivar from the Rebellion® range, a series of varieties selected for their compact habit, evolving flowering in dense balls, and excellent adaptation to cold winters. Rebellion® hydrangeas are now distributed in several Central European countries, notably the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary, where they feature prominently in the catalogues of specialist nurseries.
Hydrangea ‘Dark Pink Love’ is a well-branched deciduous shrub with a rounded, compact silhouette. At maturity, it reaches between 1 m and 1.20 m in height, with a spread of 90 cm to 1.10 m. In favourable conditions, it can grow up to 1.50 m in all directions, with an annual growth of around 10 to 20 cm. From June until autumn, it is covered with large globular inflorescences composed of tightly packed sterile flowers. They open in bright green shades, then gradually transform into an intense, rich, deep dark pink. The decorative effect is enhanced by the simultaneous presence of flowers at different stages of ripening on the same plant. The flowering is continuous, appearing first on the previous year's wood, then on new growth. Deciduous foliage enhances this generous flowering with its texture and density. The leaves are broad, opposite, oval to elliptical, finely toothed on the edges and ending in a tapered point. They are dark green, slightly glossy, and they measure about 10 to 15 cm in length. In autumn, they colour before falling.
Little affected by late frosts, Hydrangea Rebellion® ‘Dark Pink Love’ thrives in semi-shaded areas of the garden, particularly on east or north-east facing aspects. It will find a place in borders, in a low flowering hedge or as a specimen plant at the heart of a small garden. Thanks to its compact habit, it can easily be grown in a pot on a patio, balcony or along a walkway. Combine it with brunneras with silver foliage, Carex comans 'Bronze Form', or astrantias with red flowers to create refined shady scenes. For spring flowers, plant some grape hyacinths or botanical crocuses at its feet. Its globular inflorescences also make very beautiful cut flower arrangements indoors.
Note: The colour of the flowers of Hydrangea macrophylla varies significantly depending on the soil pH. Varieties that are traditionally blue turn pink in neutral or alkaline soil. To maintain a beautiful blue colour, mix ericaceous soil or peat into your garden soil and add aluminium sulphate (slate contains it) or alum each spring.

Planting and care
Plant hydrangea macrophylla Rebellion Dark Pink Love in spring or early autumn, preferably in a shaded position, for example against an east-facing wall. It tolerates morning sun well. It will need shelter from cold, drying winds. It does not necessarily require acidic soil, but appreciates deep, moist yet well-drained, fairly fertile soil, possibly enriched with a good fertiliser before planting. If the soil is dry at the foot of the wall, position the root ball at least 30 to 40 cm from the base and incorporate plenty of well-rotted compost to help retain moisture in the soil. This shrub is very hardy and capable of flowering on the current year's shoots; it will be fine planted in very cold regions.
