Description

The Hydrangea macrophylla 'Endless Summer Bloomstar' is a plant known for its perpetual flowering. It's part of the Endless Summer series and has plump, spherical flowers that start bright pink and turn raspberry pink. In acidic soil, the flowers can sometimes turn blue. The flowers have a classic look and are very fresh. Towards the end of summer, the plant's foliage turns red, becoming more vibrant until it falls. This variety of hydrangea is exceptional because it can produce flowers on both one-year-old wood and the current year's growth. 'Bloomstar' will bloom from the beginning of summer until October, regardless of where it is planted.

The 'Endless Summer Bloomstar' is a type of Hydrangea macrophylla belonging to the Hydrangea family and native to China and Japan. This shrub is part of a series of selectively bred varieties known for their exceptional ability to flower repeatedly throughout the season on both one-year-old and new branches. The shrub is hardy with a bushy and rounded habit, growing up to 1.80 m (5 ft 11 in) in all directions. From June to October, the tiny flowers bloom in dense clusters, forming large pompoms of pink in neutral soil, blue in acidic soil, or soil rich in aluminium sulphate, then gradually fading into a paper-like texture. The flowers renew themselves tirelessly until the foliage turns into beautiful autumn colours. The colours are even more spectacular when the shrub receives direct sunlight. During the summer, the flowering is accompanied by deciduous dark green foliage. The leaves are opposite, simple, ovate to elliptical, and taper to a point, with a minimum length of ten centimetres.

Hydrangeas are resilient and dependable plants that can flourish and bloom for several years in a garden. Known for their exceptional hardiness, these shrubs are popular for brightening up the north side of a house. They can thrive in flower beds or hedges, but they truly deserve a prime location near the terrace or entrance, where their beauty can be fully appreciated. Although these plants do not tolerate limestone, they are not restricted to heathland areas. You can mix them with Magellan fuchsias or the unusual Fuchsia hatschbachii, a climbing species, along with annual impatiens, or plant spring-flowering bulbs in front of their rounded silhouette. You can enjoy their stunning flowers for an extended period, either in the garden or as part of a bouquet at home.

Planting and care

Plant the Hydrangea macrophylla 'Endless Summer Bloomstar' in spring or early autumn, preferably in a semi-shaded position, for example against an east- or even north-facing wall. Protect it from cold and drying winds. This variety requires a few hours of sun per day to develop beautiful autumn colours. It does not necessarily require ericacious soil, but appreciates a deep, moist but well-drained, and fairly fertile soil, that has been improved with a good fertiliser before planting. If the soil is dry at the base of the wall, place the root ball at least 30 or 40 cm (11.8 - 15.7 in) away from the base of the wall and add well rotted compost to improve water retention in the soil. Very hardy, the Hydrangea macrophylla is not afraid to be planted in cold regions.

When it comes to pruning, you should remove any faded flowers on the first bud or the pair of buds directly below. Additionally, you should cut back a quarter, or a third of the oldest stems to the base when the plant matures. This will help promote the formation of young shoots. You should carry out this pruning every year during March and April.
