More information

A particularly floriferous variety in the Endless Summer series. Its spherical, flattened flower heads are already glorious in blue and pink. Sterile pink florets form a crown which surrounds a broad plate of fertile florets that are pink in neutral soil and blue in acidic soil. In late summer, beneath the season's last flowers, foliage gradually takes shape, turning from dark green to crimson red, then scarlet. Able to produce flowers on one-year-old wood and this year's shoots, 'Twist and Shout' will bloom, come what may, in all climates from early summer to October. So many qualities will undoubtedly make this variety an exceptional hydrangea.

Description

Like the other varieties in the Endless Summer series, the Hydrangea macrophylla 'Endless Summer Twist and Shout' is a plant with an exceptionally long flowering season. Its spherical and flattened flower heads are gloriously beautiful. Pink sterile flowers form a light crown surrounding a broad plate of fertile flowers that are pink in neutral soil and blue in acidic soil.

The Hydrangea macrophylla from which 'Endless Summer Twist and Shout' originates belongs to the Hydrangea family and is a bush native to China and Japan. 'Endless Summer Twist and Shout' is part of a series of selected varieties for their excellent ability to reflower throughout the season, both on one-year-old branches and on the year's shoots. It is a hardy bush with a rounded, bushy habit, almost as wide as it is tall, from 1.50 m (4 ft 11 in) to 1.80 m (5 ft 11 in) in all directions. From June to October, its flower heads form continuously. They then fade into a texture resembling paper, taking on pretty faded hues. The foliage takes on its beautiful autumn colours, which are even more spectacular when the bush has received direct sunlight. In summer, the flowering is accompanied by deciduous dark green foliage. The leaves are opposite, reaching a minimum length of about ten centimetres. They are simple, ovate to elliptical, ending in a tapered point.

Hydrangeas are sturdy and loyal plants that live and bloom for many years in the garden. With excellent hardiness, these bushes are well known for brightening up the north side of houses. This variety will thrive in flower beds and hedges, but it deserves a prime location near the terrace or entrance to enjoy this bush that encapsulates summer as often as possible. Even though these plants dislike limestone, hydrangeas are not strictly acid-loving plants. Mix them with magellanica fuchsias or the curious climbing species Fuchsia hatschbachii, annual impatiens, or plant spring-flowering bulbs in front of their beautiful and round silhouette. Enjoy their beautiful flowers in the garden or bouquets at home for a long time.

Planting and care

To grow the Hydrangea macrophylla 'Endless Summer Twist and Shout', it's best to plant it in spring or early autumn. You should choose a semi-shaded spot against an east- or north-facing wall. It's essential to protect the plant from cold and drying winds.

The plant needs a few hours of sunlight each day to get beautiful autumn colours. The plant doesn't necessarily need ericaceous soil but prefers deep, moisture-retaining, well-drained, and fertile soil. Before planting, enrich the soil with a good fertiliser.

If the soil is dry at the base of the wall, it's best to place the root ball at least 30 or 40 cm (11.8 - 15.7 in) away from the base. This will help retain moisture in the soil better.

The Hydrangea macrophylla is very hardy and can be planted in cold regions without fear. To prune your plant, remove the faded flowers on the topmost bud or the pair of buds directly below it. Next, cut back to the base by a quarter or one-third of the oldest stems. This will encourage the formation of young shoots. It's best to perform this pruning annually between March and April.
