Description

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Green Shadow' is a recent variety of hydrangea remarkable for its summer flowering and unique, composed of large rounded heads with green flowers gradually turning a beautiful dark pink. They bloom on a compact bushy shrub adorned with medium green foliage. This beautiful variety will find its place in a flowerbed, hedge, or in a large pot on the terrace, it will thrive in a semi-shaded and cool position in slightly acidic and well-drained soil. It is also an excellent variety for dried flowers.

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Green Shadow' is a recent creation among the many cultivars obtained through the cross-breeding of hardy species belonging to the Hydrangeaceae family, native to China and Japan. This compact shrub has a bushy habit and will reach an average height of 1.50m (5ft) with a spread of 2m. From July to September, its sterile flowers form large round inflorescences, with the colour of the sepals gradually changing from green to dark pink. This pink colour starts from the edge of the sepal and moves towards the centre of the flower, offering beautiful and remarkable nuances at every stage. The flowering is accompanied by deciduous, medium green foliage carried by sturdy stems. This Hydrangea is highly hardy, tolerating temperatures as low as -15°C (5 °F).

The 'Green Shadow' Hydrangea is a generous and astonishing plant due to the evolution of the colour of its flowers, sturdy, and excellent for partial shade. Hydrangeas, beloved by gardeners, are well known for brightening up the north side of houses. This one will thrive in an east-facing position (morning sun), away from the scorching rays of the summer sun and evening sunsets, in shrub borders as well as hedges. This variety will bring a lot of charm to the partially shaded areas of the garden, to a slightly hidden entrance, or at the corner of a porch. Although these plants dislike limestone, Hydrangeas are not strictly heather plants, they prefer fertile and clayey soils. Pair them with Magellan fuchsias, annual impatiens, or plant spring-flowering bulbs in front of their round silhouette. Enjoy their magnificent flowering in the garden or in the house for a long time, create romantic bouquets with their beautiful inflorescences.

Note: The colour of the flowers of macrophylla Hydrangeas varies depending on the pH of the soil. Traditionally blue varieties turn pink in neutral or alkaline soil. To maintain a beautiful blue colour, mix heather soil or blonde turf with your garden soil and apply aluminum sulphate (slate contains it) or alum stone every spring.

Planting and care

Plant Hydrangea macrophylla 'Green Shadow' in spring or early autumn, preferably in a slightly shaded position, in the morning sun, for example against an east-facing wall, or even north-facing. Protect it from cold, drying winds. It does not require acidic soil, but appreciates a deep, moist but well-drained, fairly fertile soil, possibly enriched with a good base fertilizer before planting. If the soil is dry at the base of the wall, place the root ball at least 30-40cm (11.8 - 15.7in) away from the base of the wall and incorporate a quantity of well-decomposed compost to better retain moisture in the soil. Very hardy, it can be planted in cold regions without fear. As for pruning, remove faded flowers on the first bud or on the pair of buds directly below. Cut back to the base by a quarter or a third the oldest stems, when the plant is mature, to promote the formation of young shoots. Perform this pruning every year during the months of March and April.
