Description
The Lady Fujiyo is a compact Hydrangea macrophylla that blooms continuously in August. Its large semi-spherical flower heads are made up of sterile florets that are either mauve-pink or bluish, depending on the soil, and are bordered with white. The plant's generous flowering is attractive from summer to autumn. It is ideal for creating fresh or dried bouquets, and its sturdy branches are well-suited for cultivation in large containers or shaded flower beds in soil not rich in limestone.
The Hydrangea macrophylla Lady Fujiyo is one of the many hybrids obtained by cross-breeding H. macrophylla and H. aspera, among others. All these hardy plants belong to the Hydrangeaceae family, originating from China and Japan. 'Lady Fujiyo' is part of a series of cultivars selected for their particularly compact habit and their long bicolour flowering. This bush is as wide as it is high, 1.20 m (3 ft 11 in) in all directions after 10 years of cultivation. From July to October, its small fertile and sterile flowers, with striking dimorphism, form large semi-spherical panicles, 15 to 20 cm (5.9 to 7.9 in) in diameter, with fertile florets implanted helically and irregularly bordered with white on a pink to blue background. Its flowers fade into a texture that resembles paper. The flowering is accompanied by a dark green, deciduous leaf. The leaves are opposite, dark green, reaching a maximum of twenty centimetres in length. They are single, ovate to elliptical, ending in a tapered point, saw-toothed. Hydrangeas can live at least 50 years.
The Magical Amethyst Hydrangea is a vigorous variety when grown in a greenhouse or conservatory. Hydrangeas are well known for brightening up the north side of houses. This one will thrive in non-burning east and west exposure, flower beds, and hedges. This variety is particularly suitable for container cultivation, which can be positioned on the terrace or near the entrance of a house. Even though these plants are not fond of limestone, they are not strictly ericaceous plants. Pair them with magellanica fuchsias, annual impatiens, or plant spring-flowering bulbs in front of their round silhouette. Enjoy their sumptuous flowering in the garden or the house.
It's worth noting that the colour of Hydrangea macrophylla flowers can vary depending on the soil's pH level. Generally, blue varieties will turn pink if planted in neutral or alkaline soil. However, if you want to maintain the blue colour of your flowers, you can mix ericaceous compost into your garden soil and add aluminium sulphate (which can be found in slate) or alum stone every spring. This will help to keep your Hydrangea macrophylla flowers looking beautiful and blue.

When planting the hydrangea macrophylla Lady Fujiyo, choose a slightly shaded spot in spring or early autumn, such as against an east-facing or northern wall. Keep it away from cold winds and the sun. It prefers deep, fresh, well-drained, and relatively fertile soil, but ericaceous soil is unnecessary. You can enrich the soil with a good base fertiliser before planting. If the soil is dry at the foot of the wall, plant the root ball at least 30-40 cm (11.8-15.7 in) away from the base and add well-rotted compost to improve soil freshness. This plant is resilient and can be planted in cold areas. When pruning, remove the faded flowers on the first or second bud. To encourage the formation of young shoots, cut back a quarter or a third of the oldest stems to the base when the plant matures. Prune every year in March or April.
