Description
Hydrangea macrophylla Rebellion® ‘Red Love’ produces superb flower balls all summer with rich and changing colours, from pistachio green gradually turning to raspberry red. This compact and very hardy variety thrives both in the ground and in pots, and it blooms reliably, even in cold climates. This deciduous shrub is well-suited to small gardens and slightly shaded patios.
Hydrangea macrophylla, of the Hydrangeaceae family, is a deciduous shrub native to East Asia, particularly China and Japan. 'Red Love' is a cultivar from the Rebellion® collection, which brings together compact and robust varieties, carefully selected for their generous flowering, controlled growth, and performance in cold climates. Marketed in several Central European countries, Rebellion® hydrangeas are prized for their evolving colour palette and extended flowering, which first forms on old wood and then on new shoots.
This 'Red Love' variety forms a well-branched shrub, taller than it is wide. It reaches approximately 1.50 m in height and 80 cm in width at maturity. Its growth is steady, around 10 to 20 cm per year. Flowering begins in June on the previous year's wood. It takes the form of spherical inflorescences composed of simple, very dense sterile flowers, which bloom until September on the current year's shoots. Displaying green tones when opening, they gradually tint to intense pink, reaching a deep raspberry red when fully mature, sometimes shaded with cherry or garnet hues. Inflorescences at different colour stages often coexist on the same plant. The dense deciduous foliage elegantly accompanies this flowering. The leaves are opposite on the stems, ovate to elliptical, slightly heart-shaped, pointed at the tip, with toothed margins. They measure between 10 and 15 cm and are a matt to slightly satiny dark green. The shrub is deciduous.
Hydeangea Rebellion® ‘Red Love’ brings plenty of colour to partially shaded garden spots for almost four months. You can plant it in a shrub bed, a flowering hedge, or a large pot on the patio. To create beautiful contrasts, combine it with ligularias ('Desdemona', 'Britt-Marie Crawford'), white Japanese anemones ('Honorine Jobert', 'Whirlwind'), or hostas 'Halcyon' and 'Francee'. At its feet, plant some blue grape hyacinths or botanical daffodils, for example.
Note: The flower colour of Hydrangea macrophylla varies significantly according to the soil pH. Varieties that are traditionally blue turn pink in neutral or alkaline soil. To maintain a beautiful blue colour, mix ericaceous soil or peat into your garden soil and add aluminium sulphate (slate contains it) or alum stone each spring.

Planting and care
Plant Hydrangea macrophylla Rebellion Red Love in spring or early autumn, preferably in a shaded position, for example against an east-facing wall. It tolerates morning sun well. Protect it from cold and drying winds. It doesn't necessarily require acidic soil, but appreciates deep, moist but well-drained, fairly fertile soil, possibly enriched with a good fertiliser before planting. If the soil is dry at the foot of the wall, place the root ball at least 30 or 40 cm from the base and incorporate plenty of well-decomposed compost to better retain moisture in the soil. It is very hardy, capable of flowering on the current year's shoots, and it can be planted in very cold regions.
