Description

Hydrangea macrophylla 'French Cancan' belongs to the Rendez-Vous® series, recently developed in France, bringing together original and floriferous varieties, ideal for indoor cultivation. This variety is distinguished by large flat inflorescences in various shades of fuchsia, carried by sturdy stems. With its unique colours and shapes, it fits perfectly in small gardens as well as on a terrace with a contemporary style, in moist and non-calcareous soil.

Hydrangea macrophylla 'French Cancan' is valuable for its flowering. It is easy to grow and almost maintenance-free. It is the result of cross-breeding between H. macrophylla and H. serrata, among others. All these hardy plants belong to the Hydrangeaceae family and are native to Japan.

'French Cancan' is part of a series of recent and different cultivars, selected by the SICAMUS nursery in Angers for their sturdy stems, floribundance, and ability to be grown both in the ground and indoors. 'French Cancan' has a compact, rounded, regular and elegant habit. It reaches a mature size of about 1m (4ft) in all directions, with moderate growth. From June to September-October, its small fertile and sterile flowers form flattened inflorescences (15 to 20cm (6 to 8in)). They consist of an outer crown of large florets, with pale-pink fringed petals edged with deeper pink, surrounding a core of fertile florets in small white-pink buds. The flowering period extends over deciduous, shiny dark green foliage. The wide leaves are opposite, reaching a minimum length of about 10cm (4in). They are simple, ovate, ending in a pointed tip, and are coarsely toothed like a saw. Hydrangeas can live for at least 50 years.

'French Cancan' is an easy and charming plant. It is ideal as a showcase plant in the garden, on a terrace, or in the house. Hydrangeas are well known for brightening up the north side of houses. This one will thrive in a non-burning east or west exposure, in full sun or partial shade, in beds as well as in isolation. This variety is particularly suitable for container cultivation, which can be placed in a beautiful pot on a terrace or near an entrance. Even though these plants dislike calcareous soil, they are not strictly acid-loving plants. Pair them with Magellan fuchsias or annual impatiens, or plant spring-flowering bulbs in front of their round silhouette. Enjoy their sumptuous flowering for a long time in the garden or in the house for a long time.

Planting and care

Plant in spring or early autumn, preferably in a slightly shaded position, for example against an east-facing wall or even to the north. In very cold regions, it may be prudent to overwinter it in a cold greenhouse or in the conservatory, even though it can withstand -15°C (5°F). Keep it protected from cold and drying winds. It does not require ericaceous soil, but appreciates deep, cool, well-drained, fairly fertile soil, possibly enriched with a good base fertiliser before planting. If planting near a wall and the soil is dry at its base, place the root ball at least 30 to 40cm (12 to 16in) away from it and incorporate a quantity of well-decomposed compost to better retain moisture in the soil. Very hardy, it is not afraid to be planted in cold regions.

As for pruning, remove the faded flowers on the first bud or on the pair of buds directly below. When the plant is mature, prune the older stems back to the base by a quarter or a third. This will encourage the formation of young shoots. Carry out this pruning every year during March and April.
