Description

The Hydrangea macrophylla 'Verdi' is a glorious ball-shaped hydrangea that catches your eye with its unique green flowers and the frilly look of its petals.

It is a small bush that flowers in summer and takes on beautiful colours in autumn. Its globular flower heads change from tender green to pale green, then darken to a deep red at the end of the season, regardless of the soil. Like all hydrangeas, it prefers soil low in limestone. It is ideal for a large pot on the terrace or balcony and in semi-shaded beds. Its flowers are beautiful in bouquets.

The Hydrangea macrophylla 'Verdi' is a recent Dutch variety. It is a hybrid obtained by cross-breeding hardy species and varieties that belong to the Hydrangeaceae family, native to China and Japan. This small bush has a rounded habit, supported by sturdy stems that easily support the weight of the flowers. A little less wide than high, it will measure about 95 cm (37.4 in) in height and width, eventually, a little less in a pot, depending on growing conditions. Its flowering begins in July and flowers again in SeptemberThe sterile florets are single to semi-double for the' Verdi' variety. They cluster on nearly spherical flower heads measuring 10 to 15 cm (3.9 to 5.9 in) in diameter. The colour of Verdi's flowers does not depend on the pH of the soil. The flowering rests on elegant dark green leaves, which take on yellow hues in the autumn before falling. The leaves are opposite, reaching about fifteen centimetres in length. They are single, ovate to elliptical, ending in a pointed tip, and serrated. Hydrangeas can live at least 50 years.

The 'Verdi' Hydrangea has excellent hardiness, maintains a neat appearance under all circumstances and offers gently original flowering. Hydrangeas are well known for brightening up the north side of houses. This one will enjoy an east or west exposure that is not scorching in beds and small hedges. This variety is suited for growing in the ground or containers, which can be placed on the terrace or near the entrance. Even if the hydrangeas are not fond of limestonethey are not strictly ericaceous plants; they thrive in good non-limestone garden soils. Mix them with magellanica fuchsiasannual impatiens, or plant spring flowering bulbs and lilies in front of their round silhouette. Enjoy their sumptuous and long-lasting flowering in the garden or at home.

Planting and care

To plant the hydrangea macrophylla Verdi, choose a slightly shaded spot in spring or early autumn, such as against an east-facing or northern wall. Keep it away from cold winds and the sun. It prefers deep, fresh, well-drained, and relatively fertile soil, but ericaceous soil is unnecessary. You can enrich the soil with a good base fertiliser before planting. If the soil is dry at the foot of the wall, plant the root ball at least 30-40 cm (11.8-15.7 in) away from the base and add well-rotted compost to improve soil freshness. This plant is resilient and can be planted in cold areas. When pruning, remove the faded flowers on the first or second bud. To encourage the formation of young shoots, cut back a quarter or a third of the oldest stems to the base when the plant matures. Prune every year in March or April.
