Description

Hydrangea paniculata ‘Living Candy Love’ is a paniculate hydrangea ideal for small gardens, borders and growing in pots. Compact and generous, it offers a decorative flowering for about 100 days, in the form of very dense panicles, changing from cream white to pink. Its sturdy stems easily support the weight of the flowers, and its hardiness (down to –30 °C) allows it to be grown even in very cold climates.

Living Candy Love® (formerly marketed under the name ‘Living Summer Love’) is a compact paniculate hydrangea, registered under the code name ‘LC NO2’ PBR. It was bred in 2017 by Alex Schoemaker, a Dutch horticulturist based in Boskoop. This cultivar is part of the Living Creations® series, an innovative collection of paniculate hydrangeas selected for their exceptionally long flowering (up to 100 days), their robustness and ease of cultivation, even in harsh climates. This cultivar received a bronze medal at the KVBC* competition for its particularly long flowering, its impeccable appearance and the exceptional density of its panicles.
With a bushy and well-branched habit, ‘Living Candy Love’ reaches approximately 1.30m in height and 1.50m in width at maturity. Its deciduous, dark green and slightly downy foliage remains decorative throughout the season before falling in autumn. Its stems are robust and very straight. The long flowering period begins in July and extends until the end of September. The floral panicles are composed solely of sterile flowers that change from cream-white to a deep pink over time. You will see them change appearance every 4 weeks. This variety flowers on the current year’s wood, which makes it more tolerant of spring frosts.

With its moderate growth, Hydrangea paniculata 'Living Candy Love' is an excellent choice for small spaces, shrub borders, low hedges or container cultivation. Its long-lasting and decorative inflorescences are also well-suited for fresh or dried arrangements. To accompany it, choose, for example, white or pink cluster-flowered bush rosesweigelas for pots and deutzias to play with contrasts and shapes.

*prestigious competition in Europe, founded by KVBC (Belgian association of plant producers), regularly testing new cultivars; it gives an insight into their performance under varied conditions.

Planting and care

Hydrangea paniculata 'Living Candy Love' is not demanding about soil type, as long as it is not too heavy, too alkaline, or too dry in summer. It requires a sunny position that is not scorching or partial shade. When planting, place it in deeply worked soil. A good base fertiliser (hoof and horn or dried blood) will help your plant establish and feed it without risk of scorch. If your soil tends to be dry, mix compost and potting compost with the soil when backfilling the planting hole, and create a watering basin on the surface. Mulch in summer to save on watering. The growth in spring is quite late.
Hydrangea paniculata are more resilient to occasional lack of water and establish easily even in non-acidic soil (though avoid strongly chalky soils).
