Description
Hydrangea paniculata Living Strawberry Blossom® is a paniculate hydrangea perfectly suited to small gardens and pot cultivation. Its charming, pretty white panicles become increasingly pink as summer progresses. This shrub with sturdy stems offers abundant flowering that remains decorative for nearly three months. Elegant, delightfully coloured and easy-going, it brings a sweet and refined touch to both garden and terrace.
Living Strawberry Blossom® is a paniculate hydrangea from the Living Creations® series, registered under the code ‘LC NO3’ PBR. This cultivar was introduced in 2017 by Alex Schoemaker in the Netherlands. It received a silver medal at the KVBC competition in 2020, rewarding the quality of its flowering, the sturdiness of its structure and its ease of cultivation.
At maturity, this shrub reaches approximately 1m in height and 1.20m in width, with a well-structured bushy habit and sturdy stems. Its deciduous foliage is dark green and slightly downy. Flowering begins in July and continues until September, representing approximately 100 days. The conical, 25 to 30cm long inflorescences first open pure white, then gradually take on soft pink hues, before turning to deep pink at the end of summer. This very hardy hydrangea withstands temperatures down to –30 °C. It thrives in both full sun and partial shade, provided it is planted in moist, fertile, well-drained soil, preferably neutral to slightly acidic. Not very susceptible to diseases, it also shows great tolerance to urban conditions.
Hydrangea paniculata Living Strawberry Blossom® is a safe bet for all types of gardens. Its large panicles remain decorative for a long time, even after flowering. They can also be used in fresh or dried cut flower arrangements. It can be used in shrub borders, low hedges or containers. To accompany it, choose, for example, pink roses such as 'The Fairy' or 'Bonica'. A Japanese spiraea 'Little Princess', with light pink flowers, will create a lovely textural contrast. To reinforce the depth of this display, add a Physocarpus 'Diabolo' or 'Lady in Red', with deep purple foliage.

Hydrangea paniculata 'Living Strawberry Blossom' is undemanding when it comes to soil type, as long as it is not too heavy, not too chalky and not too dry in summer. It requires a sunny position, without scorching heat, or partial shade. Plant it in deeply cultivated soil. A good base fertiliser (horn and dried blood) will encourage your young plant to establish and feed it without the risk of burning. If your soil tends to be dry, mix in compost and potting compost when filling the planting hole, and create a watering basin on the surface. Mulch in summer to reduce watering. Growth in spring is quite late.
Hydrangea paniculata are more tolerant of occasional lack of water and establish easily even in non-acidic soil (nevertheless, avoid heavily lime-bearing soils).

It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
