Description

Hydrangea paniculata Unique is one of the first shrubby hydrangeas with panicles. Very resistant to drought, it easily establishes itself even in non-acidic soil. It flowers from July to the first frosts and its large sterile flowers, 25 cm (9.8 in) in length, are white at budburst and then turn a very soft pink in the middle of flowering, when planted in a sunny exposure, before becoming dark red at the end of the flowering period. The flowers are gathered in panicles of 10 to 20 cm (3.9 to 7.9 in) in diameter.

Its green, ovate, dentate and pointed leaves are deciduous and measure from 7 to 15 cm (2.8 to 5.9 in) in length. Originating from China, Japan and Sakhalin Island in Russia, it is similar to Hydrangea paniculata Grandiflora but more vigorous. At maturity, it reaches a height of 3 to 4 m (9 ft 10 in to 13 ft).

This fast-growing hydrangea will beautifully decorate your flower beds. You can place it isolated in a flowering hedge, for example. Hydrangeas are well known for brightening up the north-facing side of houses. It can likewise be grown in a container on a terrace. The flowers are also magnificent when they are dried.

Planting and care

Place Hydrangea paniculata Unique in the sun or partial shade, protected from cold and dry winds. Plant it in fertile, fresh but well-drained soil. Water frequently during flowering. To obtain impressive inflorescences, cut back the shoots from the previous year in spring. This hydrangea can be subject to grey rot, powdery mildew and root rot. Aphids and weevils are fond of it.
