Description
Weigela florida Big Love is a new variety that is particularly compact, very floriferous and delicately coloured, perfectly suited for cultivation in pots or embellishing small spaces. Its beautiful flowers, a soft purple pink, bloom profusely for several weeks between the end of spring and summer. This shrub will bring a lot of cheerfulness to a rustic or romantic flower bed and will enliven the terrace or balcony for a good part of the year.
Originally from northern China, Japan and Korea, Weigela florida is a deciduous shrub belonging to the Caprifoliaceae family. This calcicolous (preferring calcareous soils) shrub has a fibrous and tracing root system, which perfectly supports transplantation. The 'Big Love' cultivar has recently been selected for its small size and floribundity. This shrub has an upright, rounded and bushy habit, and forms a ramified bush that will ultimately not exceed 80 cm (32 in) in height. Its medium-green foliage remains attractive from spring to autumn. It consists of ovate to elliptical leaves that are sessile (without petioles and directly attached to the branches) and pubescent on the underside. Flowering begins in May-June and continues until August. Its funnel-shaped flowers have an intermediate colour between pink and violet. They are carried in corymbs at the end of the branches from the previous year and the current year. This flowering is also highly melliferous and nectariferous.
Hardy down to -20 °C (-4 °F), Weigela 'Big Love' will thrive in many regions, in sunny or semi-shaded conditions, in an ordinary soil that remains fresh but well drained. This small-sized variety that forms a ball of flowers brings a lot of charm to the garden, as well as to the terrace. In a flower bed, for example, combine it with Physocarpus, pheasant trees (Leycesteria formosa), ornamental brambles, a small viburnum chosen for its autumn colours (Viburnum 'Bailey Compact'), or a Purple Nana Barberry. In the background, the very dark foliage of holly, mahonia or yew will create a beautiful setting for its flowers and provide winter decor.

Planting and care
Hardy down to -20 °C (-4 °F), Weigela florida Big Love thrives in partially shaded to very sunny positions, the latter promoting flower production. Plant it in a well-drained, but moist soil, with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, from October to March (excluding the frost period). To maintain a compact habit and encourage abundant flowering, prune back the branches that have borne spring flowers by 2/3, just after flowering. Weigela is an easy-to-grow shrub but it dislikes drought and sea spray.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
