Description

The Double Early Tulip 'Foxy Foxtrot' presents large, beautifully double flowers with numerous petals in light and bright shades of orange, delicately edged with golden yellow and a deeper orange. With its various shades, this tulip offers a unique texture reminiscent of a peony. Easy to grow and resistant to weather and disease, this charming double tulip is ideal for borders, flower beds, pots, and containers, combined with other spring-flowering bulbs and seasonal flowers to create charming compositions. Its magnificent flowers are also splendid when arranged in bouquets.

The Double Early Tulip 'Foxy Foxtrot' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is classified in the group of double early tulips, whose main characteristic is to flower at the same height, making it a popular category among enthusiasts of well-arranged borders. Perched on strong 30-40 cm (12-16in) stems, just above the widely lanceolate leaves, the fully open double flowers, 10 to 12 cm (4 to 5in) wide, open up in a dense and colourful array of petals. With a superb colour, the flowers are composed of petals where yellow-orange, apricot, and pink blend together. The flowering takes place in April, at the heart of the tulip season. The foliage, composed of beautiful glaucous green lanceolate leaves, yellows and dries a few weeks after flowering, while the bulb enters its dormant phase.

Double early tulips offer a touch of originality in terms of colours in your borders or bouquets, while being resistant and able to withstand climate variations. When designing your borders, it is important to consider the height and flowering period, as these characteristics vary from one variety to another. It is wise to plant a few extra bulbs specifically for cutting, as these tulips make magnificent cut flowers that remain fresh for a long time in a vase. The 'Foxy Foxtrot' tulip easily integrates into all styles of gardens. In a contemporary garden, it creates a wonderful contrast with varieties such as the 'Triumph Fontainebleau' or the double early 'Palmyra'. With its double flowers in shades of orange, it brings charm to a romantic-inspired garden alongside pale pink tulips such as the double early 'Foxtrot' or the double early 'Flashpoint'. In a natural garden, forget-me-nots, wood hyacinths, or grape hyacinths will enhance its warm tones.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Foxy Foxtrot' tulip bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), spacing them 10 cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The tulip will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant it in a good exposure, sunny or semi-shaded. Once flowering is over, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
