Description

Tulipa 'Crown of Dynasty' is a recent variety of Triumph tulip that is as unusual as it is coquettish. Its large corolla unfolds petals that are curiously curled at the edges, almost tubular, giving it the appearance of a crown. The flowers are a beautiful blend of ivory-white and fresh pink. It blooms in the middle of the tulip season, in April-May, just after the early tulips. It would be stunning in a romantic bouquet, or in a well-kept garden, paired with small white muscari and its counterpart in immaculate white, T. 'White Liberstar'.

Tulipa 'Crown of Dynasty' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Horticulturally bred, this mutation of the 'Dynasty' tulip was recently introduced in the Netherlands. It is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, which is characterised by narrow cup-shaped flowers. It will reach a height of 45cm (18in) when in bloom, and is resistant to rain and wind. The flowers appear at the top of tall stems, well above the widely lanceolate green-blue leaves. The large single flowers are somewhat square-shaped. They have a thick texture and are composed of large slightly undulate and recurved petals. The colour of the petals is a stunning gradient from white to fresh pink, from the base to the border. Flowering takes place from April 15 to May 15, in the heart of the tulip season.

Tulipa 'Crown Dynasty' works well in large, well-drained flower beds, accompanied by foliage plants (grasses, fennel, alchemilla). Foliage plants like alchemilla or tiarella will cover the empty space left by the tulip's dry foliage in summer. By combining tulips, you can create your own harmonies. Plant it with pastel-coloured tulips, pink tulips ('New Design'), white tulips ('Calgary'), or purple tulips ('Synaeda Amor'). You can also plant it with narcissus like 'Thalia' or 'Mount Hood'. It can be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, pots, and containers. It works well on balconies and patios. The flowers are ideal for creating elegant bouquets. Only use a little water in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The bulbs will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
