Description

Nomocharis aperta is a small bulb that thrives in moist shade, belonging to the Lily family and bearing beautiful soft pink anemone-like flowers with irregular black spots in late spring.

Originating from mountainous areas in the Yunnan province, Nomocharis aperta is a bulb belonging to the Liliaceae family. In late spring, it produces inflorescences that reach a height of 30 to 50cm (12 to 20in), adorned with lovely open bell-shaped flowers resembling anemones. The flowers have 6 more or less intense pink tepals, irregularly punctuated with black spots.

In early autumn, the flowers are followed by small light brown capsules containing round-oval, whitish, and very flattened seeds.

Nomocharis aperta thrives in cool woodland environments, preferring acidic soil rich in humus that remains moist during the summer, without becoming waterlogged. It enjoys warmth and protected, well-lit areas, but never direct sunlight. An exceptional plant for experienced gardeners.

Plant Nomocharis aperta in a moist rockery or a protected woodland, alongside arisaemas, ferns, Paris, or hostas.

Planting and care

Nomocharis aperta prefers sheltered environments, and light and moist, well-drained soil rich in humus. The soil should never dry out in summer but should also never be waterlogged in winter. In high winter humidity, the rootstock will rot. Plant them in partial shade, at the edge of large trees, facing west being the best exposure. In early spring, protect the base of the bulb against slugs and snails and check for the possible presence of Lily beetles. In heavy soil, add 1/3 leaf compost and 1/3 non-chalky sand, mixed with your topsoil to a depth and width of 20-25cm (8-10in).
