Our Range of Summer Bulbs for Dry Gardens. These summer bulbs, often originating from Mediterranean or arid regions, tolerate dry soils well, especially in summer. Floriferous and drought-tolerant, they are valuable for creating sustainable borders with low maintenance requirements.

Amaryllis belladonna offers large, bright pink flowers in late summer, after a long summer dormancy. Botanical gladioli, such as Gladiolus byzantinus Whistling Jack, flower in spring in dry soils. Nerine bowdenii and its cultivars like 'Isobel', with autumn flowering, offer elegant pink trumpet-shaped inflorescences on deciduous foliage. Among the lilies, the Madonna lily and Lilium regale tolerate dry soils in summer. Their large white flowers are also remarkably fragrant. Dracunculus vulgaris, the common dragon arum, is a botanical curiosity: it produces a large dark purple spathe before the heat arrives and displays highly divided foliage.

Many "dry garden" bulbs are actually adapted to Mediterranean climates, where rainfall is concentrated in autumn, winter and spring. Their strategy involves growing and flowering when water is available, then entering summer dormancy to avoid drought. They are therefore well adapted to dry soils in summer, but they need moisture during their growth period.

These bulbs thrive in light, well-drained soils, often calcareous or stony, in sunny positions. Plant them in autumn or spring, depending on the species, and limit watering in summer. Protect the more tender species with dry mulch or by growing them in containers to be stored indoors during winter.
