'Marketmore' cucumber, sometimes sold as ‘Marketmore 76’, is a popular American slicing variety that is early-maturing, productive and vigorous. It produces 20-25 cm long, smooth green fruits with crisp, tasty flesh, few seeds and no bitter aftertaste. An excellent quality variety, suitable for growing either in a greenhouse or outdoors. Sow from March to May and harvest from July to October.
Cucumber is one of the most popular summer vegetables. Both refreshing and low in calories, it is perfect added to summer salads and cocktails, sliced in sandwiches and blended into smoothies. Cucumber comes in an array of colours, shapes and sizes. Classic slicing varieties are long and dark green, lunchbox varieties are short and bumpy, Armenian cucumbers are light green and lemon cucumbers are round and yellow! Some are suitable for growing outdoors, others need to be grown under cover in a polytunnel or a greenhouse.
Cucumbers do well in light, loose, nutrient-dense soils with plenty of sunlight and temperatures ranging from 18 to 22°C. Cucumbers are moisture-loving plants that need watering regularly.
Harvesting: Cucumbers are harvested when they are full-sized, before they start to turn yellow and bitter. Regular harvests will stimulate fruit production. They are generally ready to harvest about 3 months after sowing, from June to September.
Storage: Cucumbers will stay fresh for several days in the refrigerator. They can also be pickled or lacto-fermented for later use.
Good to know: Cucumber plants are prone to powdery mildew (a fungal disease that causes a white down to form on the surface of the leaves). When watering, try to avoid getting water on the leaves or flowers. When growing cucumbers in a greenhouse or polytunnel, make sure it is well-ventilated. Good companion plants include lettuce and beans. Avoid growing your cucumbers too close to potatoes and tomatoes.
Even if the vegetable garden is first and foremost a place for growing great quality veg, it’s always a good idea to leave a bit of room for flowers. Growing flowers alongside your vegetable plants will make your general gardening experience more enjoyable and is a great way to attract pollinators and repel garden pests! Flowers such as gaillardia, marigolds, zinnias, cosmos or nasturtiums can be sown in and around the rows of vegetables. Herbs such as dill can be very useful also. Bear in mind that some companion plants self-seed easily and can be a bit invasive (borage, chives, lemon balm etc.)
NB. Organic seeds (in French "AB" for "Agriculture Biologique") are produced from plants that aren't treated with phytosanitary products (insecticides, weed killers). The seeds do not undergo post-harvest treatment. They carry the AB label and are approved by Ecocert, an independent structure.

Cucumber sowing:
Cucumber germination occurs at a temperature between 16°C and 35°C. Germination usually takes 8 to 10 days at these temperatures. Sowing is done under cover in March/April (indoors, in a greenhouse or on a hotbed) and in open ground from mid-May to June, when the soil is sufficiently warmed up and the risk of frost has passed. To spread out the harvest, you can stagger your sowings, every 15 days for example.
Sowing under cover: Fill pots (or trays with drainage holes) with special sowing compost and plant 2 or 3 seeds per pot. Water with a very fine spray. When the two true leaves appear, thin out to keep only one plant per pot. Depending on the sowing date, you can either transplant them into the open ground if the soil is warm enough, or keep one plant in each pot until temperatures rise. Make sure the substrate remains moist but not waterlogged and keep it at a moderate temperature. When transplanting into the open ground, provide a spacing of 1m in all directions if the cultivation is done flat or 1m between rows and 50cm within the row if the cultivation is trained.
Sowing in open ground: Stretch a string and make furrows, spacing the rows 1m apart. Sow in holes (2 to 3 seeds in each hole). On the row, the holes will be spaced 1m apart if the cultivation is done flat or 50cm apart if the cultivation is trained. Cover with fine soil and gently firm it down with the back of a rake. Water with a fine spray to keep the soil moist. When the plants have reached 2 to 3 leaves, thin out to keep only one plant.
Cucumber cultivation:
Cucumber is a fairly demanding vegetable that requires rich soil. It is advisable to apply, preferably in autumn, a mature compost (about 3 kg per m²), by scratching it to a depth of 5 cm, after having loosened the soil as is done for all vegetable crops. It prefers neutral soils (pH 7) but will also thrive in slightly acidic or alkaline soil (pH between 5.5 and 7.5).
Cucumber can be cultivated flat, but to save space and promote production, don't hesitate to take advantage of its climbing nature by training it: on a frame covered with wire mesh, inclined at 45°, it will provide beneficial shade for lettuces or even in a teepee to add a touch of whimsy to the vegetable garden.
When the plants are trained vertically, the cultivation is done on a single stem that is pinched out at a maximum height of 2.5m. When grown flat, pinch above the second leaf to obtain two stems that will be pinched out above the 4th leaf. The final pruning consists of cutting back to one leaf above each formed fruit.
Plan for 2 or 3 hoeings and a mulch at the beginning of summer to maintain soil moisture.
